Oh, Steve Winwood, how I wanted to meet Valerie. She sounded great. And so did you. I loved the keyboards, I loved the lyrics, I really loved the lyrics just before the main chorus. And of course I loved the chorus. LOVED the chorus. At the time, I didn’t know what the title of this song was, so I just wrote this down as “Same Boy I Used To Be” and I thought the lyrics were “Call on me! Call me! Call on me! Call me!” So I didn’t know that the girl that you were singing to was actually named Valerie until much later, but once I figured that out, it sounded right to me. As someone who did and continues to think Valerie Bertinelli is a beautiful, talented woman, it was nice to know that there was finally a song that I could sing just to her. And wouldn’t it have been great if Valerie and I had been an item and I could have sung this out to her and begged her to call me. Damn you, Eddie Van Halen.
Anyway, one other thing, Steve Winwood, don’t know if you’re aware of this:
Ummm. . .
I’m just gonna say, Steve Winwood, that this gives me a whole new appreciation for this song, if you know what I’m saying. Any chance one of those girls is named Valerie?
“Valerie”
So wild
Standin’ there
With her hands in her hair
I can’t
Help remember
Just where she touched me
There’s still
No face
Here in
Her place
So cool
She was like
Jazz on a summer’s day
Music
High and sweet
Then she just flew away
Now she can’t
Be that warm
With the wind
In her arms
Valerie
Call on me
Call on me
Valerie
Come and see me
I’m the same boy I used to be
Love songs
Fill the night
But they don’t tell it all
Not how
Lovers cry
Just like they’re dying
Her cries
Hang there
In time
Somewhere
Some day, some good wind
May blow her back to me
Some night
I may hear
Her like she used to be
No, it can’t
Be that warm
With the wind
In her arms
Valerie
Call on me
Call on me
Valerie
Come and see me
I’m the same boy I used to be
<awesome Steve Winwood jam>
So cool
She was like
Jazz on a summer’s day
Music
High and sweet
Then she just flew away
Now she can’t
Be that warm
With the wind
In her arms
Valerie
Call on me
Call on me
Valerie
Come and see me
I’m the same boy I used to be
I’m the same boy I used to be
