Radio IV, side A, track 12: “Better Be Home Soon” by Crowded House

Oh, Crowded House, this could have been a country song.  Replace the keyboards with some steel guitar, throw a couple beer bottles and a pick-up truck in it, and you’ve got yourself a slow song for country fans to shuffle their boots to at the local honky tonk.  But since there is no steel guitar and there are no beer bottles or pick-ups and the lyrics are actually more, how do you say, high-falutin’, this is instead a great pop song about the realities of love.  At the time, I didn’t really appreciate the complicated simplicity of this one.  The songs I gravitated toward were those that talked about love that was so intense that the thought of living without someone was incomprehensible.  But perhaps I should have heeded songs like this one instead, that sang about the pain of break-ups, but the ability to move on and live your life without that special someone.  Had I done so, high school and college would have been far different experiences. . .

Happy Valentine’s Day, Crowded House.

“Better Be Home Soon”

Somewhere deep inside
Something’s got a hold on you
And it’s pushing me aside
See it stretch on forever

And I know I’m right
For the first time in my life
That’s why I tell you
You’d better be home soon

Stripping back the coats
Of lies and deception
Back to nothingness
Like a week in the desert

And I know I’m right
For the first time in my life
That’s why I tell you
You’d better be home soon

So don’t say no
Don’t say nothing’s wrong
‘Cause when you get back home
Maybe I’ll be gone, oh

It would cause me pain
If we were to end it
But I could start again
You can depend on it

And I know I’m right
For the first time in my life
That’s why I tell you
You’d better be home soon

Oh, that’s why I tell you
You’d better be home soon
