Radio V, side A, track 5: “Love And Mercy” by Brian Wilson

Oh, Brian Wilson, I didn’t really know how important you were at the time, but I did know that you were a part of the Beach Boys, and that’s all I really needed to know, since the Beach Boys were one of my favorite bands (though I probably wouldn’t admit it in front of my parents since they were one of my parents’ favorite bands as well).  And this song was as if the Beach Boys were all grown up and they’d realized that there was more to the world than pretty girls and fast cars and catching a wave.  It was a brief song with a mix of hopelessness and hope, all wrapped up in beautiful melodies and your distinctly awesome voice.  I appreciate you wishing me love and mercy, Brian Wilson, and allow me to wish it right back atcha.

“Love And Mercy

I was sittin’ in a crummy movie with my hands on my chin
All the violence that occurs seems like we never win

Love and mercy, that’s what you need tonight
So love and mercy to you and your friends tonight

I was lying in my room and the news came on TV
A lotta people out there hurtin’ and it really scares me

Love and mercy, that’s what you need tonight
So love and mercy to you and your friends tonight

I was standing in a bar and watching all the people there
Oh, the loneliness in this world, well, it’s just not fair

Ooooooooooooooooo
Ooooooooooooooooo
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Ahhhhhhhhhh (Woaaahhhhhhh)

Hey, love and mercy, that’s what you need tonight
So love and mercy to you and your friends tonight
Love and mercy, that’s what you need tonight
Love and mercy tonight
