Radio VII, side A, track 1: “Wanted Dead Or Alive” by Bon Jovi

Oh, Bon Jovi, I know what you’re thinking.  “It took 7 tapes and almost 150 songs before you recorded a Bon Jovi song?!?!”  I know, I know, it’s hard for me to believe myself, Bon Jovi, but let’s not argue about the past, because here you are, and this certainly won’t be the last Bon Jovi song to grace my tapes with its presence.  And you know what, Bon Jovi?  You guys introduced me to how awesome a Western could be.  “Young Guns” and “Young Guns II” were my first foray into the genre, and now it seems like the obvious choice that you guys were involved with the music.  Because when it comes down to it, cowboys were the rock stars of their day, and if they had access to electric guitars they’d have been wailing to songs that I bet would sound an awful lot like yours around the campfire.  It was the first time that it occurred to me that you could “mash-up” genres, that you could make a rock and roll Western, or really you could mash anything up with a Western and it would be damn cool (I still miss you so much, “Firefly”).  In fact, I remember being really disappointed to discover that Clint Eastwood’s classic “Unforgiven”, while one of my favorite movies ever, did not include Metallica’s song of the same name.  And how cool would it have been to have Clint Eastwood kicking some ass with Metallica blasting over the soundtrack?  Answer:  pretty damn cool.

“Wanted Dead Or Alive”

It’s all the same, only the names will change
Every day it seems we’re wastin’ away
Another place where the faces are so cold
I’d drive all night just to get back home

I’m a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride
I’m wanted, dead or alive
Wanted, dead or alive

Sometimes I sleep, sometimes it’s not for days
And the people I meet always go their separate ways
Sometimes you tell the day by the bottle that you drink
And times when you’re alone, all you do is think

I’m a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride
I’m wanted (wanted), dead or alive
Wanted (wanted), dead or alive

Oh, I ride!

<awesome guitar solo>

Oh, I’m a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride
I’m wanted (wanted), dead or alive

And I walk these streets, a loaded six-string on my back
I play for keeps ’cause I might not make it back
I’ve been everywhere, (oh yeah), still I’m standin’ tall
I’ve seen a million faces and I’ve rocked them all

‘Cause I’m a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride
I’m wanted (wanted), dead or alive

And I’m a cowboy, I got the night on my side
And I’m wanted (wanted), dead or alive

And I ride (and I ride) dead or alive
I still drive (I still drive) dead or alive
Dead or alive
Dead or alive
Dead or alive
Dead or alive
