Radio VII, side A, track 4: “Back In Time” by Huey Lewis and The News

Oh, Huey Lewis and The News, you and “Back To The Future” have the ultimate symbiotic relationship.  It was like both of you were created to accentuate the other.  This is hands down the best song created specifically for a movie ever.  A lot of times, a movie will have some title track that gets thrown in over the end credits, and it’s good and all, but it’s peripherally about the movie at best.  This one is tailor-made for one of the best movies ever made.  It hits on all the high points of the movie but is still a great song all on its own.  If you’d never seen “Back To The Future” (and if you haven’t, what is wrong with you?!?!?), the lyrics might not make the most sense in the world, but it’s a fun song regardless.  And if you have seen the movie, well, this is just a great way to relive it.  The song is just like the movie, fast and fun.

After we got our VCR, a huge behemoth whose “remote control” was a large box with a cord that directly plugged into the machine, most of the movies we got to rent from the grocery store were movies my parents wanted to watch, which is fine, because it got me to learn the awesomeness of W.C. Fields and The Three Stooges, but my cousins had HBO (!), and occasionally they’d make a tape with three movies on it.  One of those tapes included both “Back To The Future” and “Return of the Jedi” and the fact that I didn’t wear out that VHS tape points to the resiliency of the VHS tape manufacturer, because I watched those two movies ALL THE TIME.  All the time.  And to this day, when I hear this song,  I see that flying DeLorean come zooming at me and those words “To Be Continued” flash on the screen, it takes me back to the first time I saw it and how excited I was that there would be more adventures with Marty McFly and Doc Brown.

“Back In Time”

<awesome Huey Lewis and The News intro>

Tell me, doctor
Where are we goin’ this time
Is this the 50’s
Or 1999
All I wanted to do
Was play my guitar and sing

So take me away
I don’t mind
But you better promise me I’ll be back in time

Gotta get back in time

Don’t bet your future
On one roll of the dice
Better remember
Lightning never strikes twice
Please don’t drive eighty-eight
Don’t wanna be late again

So take me away
I don’t mind
But you better promise me I’ll be back in time

Gotta get back in time

Gotta get back in time

Get me back in time

<awesome Huey Lewis and The News solo>

Gotta get back in time

Gotta get back in time

Get back, get back
(Get back, Marty)

<awesome guitar and saxophone solo>

Gotta get back in time

Gotta get back in time

Get back, get back
