Radio VII, side A, track 6: “Be Good To Yourself” by Journey

Oh, Journey, best band ever?  OK, I’ll agree with that.  Every song I hear of yours makes me so happy, even if it makes me sad.  And this one comes down squarely in the “makes me happy” column.  How can you not love a song that promotes positive mental health and is sung by Steve Perry and completely rocks?

When I was a kid, bullying was a fact of life.  Every ride on the school bus had the potential for something awful to happen, whether it was of the name-calling variety (“metal mouth” and “four-eyes” were favorites) or upper classmen testing out the strength of their new class rings against your skull.  Outside of violent criminals, teenagers are the meanest bunch of humans on the planet.  And while the big kids made my life pretty miserable (I won’t name names, but I’m okay with initials:  JB, DH, and SR are some of the worst people in the world), there were kids who got picked on even more frequently and more intensely than me.  I’d like to say I was gallant and defended those kids, but no, it was more a relief that I was off the radar, and I might even go along with stuff on occasion.  Pretty shameful.

You know what would have been awesome, Journey?  If on one of those days that one of us was really getting picked on, one of those days where death seemed a more reasonable route than ten more minutes on the bus, that suddenly there’d be this huge flash of light and we’d all shield our eyes and the roof of the bus would tear off and you guys would descend from on high and belt out this tune and remind us that even if it seemed like every kid in the county was against us, we were still pretty awesome individuals and at minimum we deserved to be nice to ourselves.  It would also have been cool if you then kicked SR in the nuts.

“Be Good To Yourself”

Runnin’ outta self-control
Gettin’ close to an overload
Up against a no-win situation
Shoulder to shoulder, push and shove
I’m hangin’ up my boxin’ gloves
I’m ready for a long vacation

Yeah

(Be good to yourself) be good to yourself when
(Nobody else will) nobody else will
(Oh, be good to yourself)
(You’re walkin’ a high wire) you’re walkin’ a high wire
(Caught in a cross-fire) caught in a cross-fire
(Oh, be good to yourself)

When you can’t give no more
They want it all but you gotta say no
I’m turnin’ off the noise that makes me crazy
Looking back with no regrets
To forgive is to forget
I want a little peace of mind to turn to

Yeah

(Be good to yourself) be good to yourself when
(Nobody else will) nobody else will
(Oh, be good to yourself)
Yeah!
You’re walkin’ a high wire
(Caught in a cross-fire) caught in a cross-fire
(Oh, be good to yourself)

<awesome synthesizer solo>

Be good

(Good to yourself when)
(Nobody else will)
Nooooooo!

<awesome guitar solo>
