Radio VII, side A, track 10: “Louie, Louie” by The Kingsmen

Oh, The Kingsmen, bless you.  You give hope to every musician who ever lived.  You’ve made a song that’s unintelligible unless you sit and study the words like it was the Da Vinci code.  Which it’s not.  And who’s going to just sit there and keep playing and rewinding until he gets the lyrics figured out?  That’s just lame.  Wait a minute. . .

Point being, The Kingsmen, you made a song that EVERYBODY knows and EVERYBODY loves and NOBODY knows the lyrics.  Except for the title, and hell, even that’s kinda suspect, because you don’t sing “Louie Louie” with a long e, sometimes it sounds like you’re singing “Lou-I”.   What is goin’ on?  It’s an amazing thing to watch when this song gets played during some dance.  Hundreds of people dance and hundreds of people sing it, and no one is singing the same thing and most people are just singing gibberishy nonsense words that maybe sound something like what you might be singing.  It’s a testament to the awesomeness of this song, The Kingsmen.  I’ve included the lyrics below, which may or may not be right, but in the end, does it matter?  The answer is no.

“Louie, Louie”

a’Louie Louie, oh no
Baby, we gotta go
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
I said Louie, Louie
Oh, baby, said we gotta go

A fine little girl waitin’ for me
Catch a ship across the sea
Sail that ship all alone
Never know if I make it home

a’Louie Louie
Nah nah nah nah
Baby, we gotta go
Oh no
I said a’Louie Louie
Oh, baby
Said we gotta go

Three nights and days I sail the sea
Think of girl, oh constantly
On that ship, I dream she’s there
I smell the rose in her hair

a’Louie, Louie
Oh no
Baby, we gotta go
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Said a’Louie Louie
Oh, baby
Said we gotta go

Okay, let’s give it to ’em, right now!

<awesome guitar solo>

See Jamaica, the moon above
It won’t be long, me see me love
Take her in my arms again
Tell her I’ll never leave again
