Radio VII, side A, track 13: “Don’t Shed A Tear” by Paul Carrack

Oh, Paul Carrack, you are vicious, my friend.  There’ve been some great break-up songs, but this is one of the best.  And I really should have paid more attention to this back in the day.  This isn’t a “I’m going to curl up in a fetal position and listen to all our old love songs” song, this is an angry, defiant “you ain’t all that” song.  Sure, I went through that angry stage now and again when I’d get dumped and do some petty, dumb things, usually mixed with alcohol, but that would quickly fade to whining and pleading and the aforementioned fetal position.  If I would have taken this to heart back in the day and embraced its message of “Well, this sucks, but I’m pretty awesome, and you’re kinda not for not recognizing that, so suck it.  Now excuse me, I have to go wrestle a mountain lion”, high school, college and beyond would have been a much different, much happier experience with a lot more girlfriends.

By the way, Paul Carrack, “a slim chance in tight pants is what you are”?  Nice.

“Don’t Shed A Tear”

Cab fare to nowhere
Is what you are
A white line to an exit sign
Is what you are

All that I saw in you
Now I see through

(Don’t shed a tear for me)
My life won’t end without you
(Without you)
Long as the night will be
The sun will rise without you

A locked door on a candy store
Is what you are
(Is what you are)
A slim chance in tight pants
Is what you are

All that I loved you for
I wanted more

(Don’t shed a tear for me)
My life won’t end without you
(Without you)
Long as the night will be
The sun will rise without you

You ain’t givin’
Well, I’m not takin’
I’m not missin’
What we ain’t makin’

All that I saw in you
Now I see through

(Don’t shed a tear for me)
My life won’t end without you
(Without you)
Long as the night will be
The sun will rise without you

(Don’t shed a tear for me)
My life won’t end without you
(Without you)
Long as the night will be
The sun will rise without you

(Is what you are)
Oh, don’t shed no tears
I don’t need, I don’t need
I don’t need
Oh, please
