Radio X, side B, track 8: “We Built This City” by Starship

Oh, Starship, this is why I love a power play weekend.  Two back to back songs by your favorite artists, which means that there’s a chance one could listen to and record two back to back songs by Starship.  Guess what, Starship?  Jackpot!  As soon as I heard “We built this city” echoing through the ether, I knew that this particular radio tape was going to have a particularly strong finish.  The rock gods must surely have been smiling on me to bless a radio tape with not one but two Starship songs, and not only that, but my two most favoritest of them.  In the years since I was originally knee-deep in the hoopla, I’ve heard and read music critics who say this is one of the worst songs to come out of the eighties.  And if by one of the worst songs they mean one of the best songs ever, then I whole-heartedly agree.

“We Built This City”

We built this city

We built this city on rock and roll
Built this city

We built this city on rock and roll

Say ya don’t know me
Or recognize my face

Say ya don’t care who goes
To that kind of place

Knee deep in the hoopla
Sinking in your fight

Too many runaways
Eating up the night

Marconi plays the mamba
Listen to the radio
Don’t you remember?
We built this city

We built this city on rock and roll

Built this city

We built this city on rock and roll
Built this city

We built this city on rock and roll

Someone always playing
Corporation games
Who cares, they’re always changing
Corporation names

We just want ta dance here
Someone stole the stage
They call us irresponsible
Write us off the page

Marconi plays the mamba
Listen to the radio
Don’t you remember?
We built this city

We built this city on rock and roll

Built this city

We built this city on rock and roll
Built this city

We built this city on rock and roll

It’s just another Sunday

In a tired old street

Police have got the choke hold, oh-oh-oh-oh-ohoh!
We just lost the beat

Who counts the money
Underneath the bar?

Who rides the wrecking ball
Into our guitars?

Don’t tell us ya need us
‘Cause we’re the ship of fools
Looking for America
Comin’ through your schools

Don’t you remember? (Remember, remember)

Marconi plays the mamba
Listen to the radio
Don’t you remember?
We built this city

We built this city on rock and roll

We built this city

We built this city on rock and roll
Built this city
We built this city on rock and roll
Built this city (Wooo-woooo!)
We built this city on rock and roll
Built this city

We built this city on rock and roll

Lol, I feel bad telling you that I can’t stand this song! But really the problem for me is that it’s on the Sing Star (are you familiar with this awesome Karaoke computer game?!) Rock Ballads disc and my man always insists on us singing it. Ironically, I’m better at the guy’s part and he does way better at singing Grace Slick’s part! It just hurts, physically hurts, to sing the track… so you can imagine how horrendous we sound… lol! 🙂 Nice post. 🙂

Sing Star is what brought me and my wife together 🙂 Now I think I need to buy it so I can sing “We Built This City” 😉

That’s the most amazing way to be brought together romantically!!! 😀 Love it! 🙂

Definitely buy it. It’s hours of fun… The 90s one is pretty good, so is the 80s… I think I got it wrong. ‘WBTC’ is on the 80s. ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now’ is on Rock Ballads. Buy it! 🙂
