Radio XII, side A, track 2: “Edge Of A Broken Heart” by Bon Jovi

Oh, Bon Jovi, I had no idea until I started writing this that this song would become an instant mystery.  So I’m sitting here listening to this awesome song and making sure I have all the lyrics down correctly, when my wife walks past the office door dancing, which she does occasionally when I’m playing a particularly great song off my tapes.  And I say to her “I know, isn’t it great?” and she continues dancing and says “I’ve never heard this song before.”

Well, Bon Jovi, I’m flabbergasted.  I’ve played this song so many times, and I know it by heart and it’s so great and it’s a BON JOVI song, for goodness’ sake, so how can my wife not know it?!?!  And I tell her it’s Bon Jovi, and STILL she says she hasn’t heard it!  Wha. . .?!?!  I explain to her that it’s BON JOVI.  How could she have not heard this song?

She stops dancing and fixes me with a look that I’m pretty familiar with and says “Look, I owned ‘Slippery When Wet’ AND ‘New Jersey’ and this song wasn’t on either of them.”

So since I was conveniently sitting right at my computer, I typed this song into Wikipedia and sure enough, this song wasn’t released on any non-compilation Bon Jovi album.  BUT, and this is delightfully delicious, it WAS featured on the soundtrack to “The Disorderlies” starring The Fat Boys, and my wife absolutely knew what movie that was, so balance was restored to the Force in our home.

It was a mind-blowing little moment, though, Bon Jovi, and one I’ve experienced from time to time since starting this little blog o’ mine.  I’m so familiar with all of the songs on these tapes that I can’t believe when someone hasn’t heard one of the songs.  How could a song that’s touched me so deeply be unknown to anyone?  But I guess we all have that, Bon Jovi, whether with a piece of music or a film or maybe even a football game.

But I mean, come on!  It’s a Bon Jovi song!

“Edge Of A Broken Heart”

And there I stood
Just like a soldier
I was tough
Until I saw her
I said hello
But she just turned away

Hey, Romeo
Whatcha doin’
With my girl,
Who are you usin’ now
Well, I turn and walk away

I’m
Gonna please her
Now
You can believe it
I’ll be there to catch her when she falls

Oooo, here I am
(On the edge of a broken heart)
I’m a man
(On the edge of a broken heart)
Here we stand
(On the edge of a broken heart)
So run if you can ’cause ya know I’m a man on the edge
(On the edge of a broken heart)
I’m on the edge
(On the edge of a broken heart)

I’m on the outside
Lookin’ inside
You’re with him
Who’s on the wrong side now
Do you still think of me

I’ve tried ta call
But no one answers
Two silhouettes
A private dancer
Lights go dim as the music starts to fade
Away

I’m
The one who needs you
Now
You can believe it
I’ll be there to catch you when you fall
Ooo, you better believe I’m the man
(On the edge of a broken heart)
Here I am
(On the edge of a broken heart)
And we stand
(On the edge of a broken heart)
So run if you can ’cause ya know I’m a man on the edge
(On the edge of a broken heart)
I’m on the edge
(On the edge of a broken heart)

<awesome Bon Jovi jam>

Oooooooohh!!!

And when I hold out my hands

I’ll be reachin’ for you

I give it all that I’ve got
That’s all I can do
When you’re waitin’ for love
I’ll be waiting for you
(On the edge of a broken heart)
Only for you
(On the edge of a broken heart)
Oh baby for you
(On the edge of a broken heart)
So run if you can
Ya know I’m a man on the edge
(On the edge of a broken heart)
I’m on the edge
(On the edge of a broken heart)
I’m on the edge
(On the edge of a broken heart)
I’m on the edge
(On the edge of a broken, broken, broken, broken broken)
