Radio XIV, side B, track 3: “Put A Little Love In Your Heart” by Annie Lennox and Al Green

Annie Lennox and Al Green - Put A Little Love In Your HeartOh, Annie Lennox and Al Green, get ready to hear a whole lot of this song.  From the moment I heard this, I was so in love with it.  You see, Annie Lennox and Al Green, back in the day I was a pretty optimistic boy.  I had my dark days during my teen years due to a hearty cocktail of raging male hormones and undiagnosed mental issues (ahhh, adolescence!), yes, no doubt.  But when you hear that phrase “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed”?  That was me, Annie Lennox and Al Green.  I wanted to believe the best in everyone, including myself.  I truly believed that I was a good person and the world was a great place full of wonderful people.

Well, let’s flash forward a few decades, Annie Lennox and Al Green.  The brightness in the eyes has faded, and the tail looks pretty ragged.  And I want to be cynical, Annie Lennox and Al Green, oh how I do.  I try to save my non-cynicism for Spider-Man comics and this little blog here and sneer at the rest of the world.  Because it’s so much safer that way, Annie Lennox and Al Green.

But the frustration lies in those moments when I’m at work and I feel a burst of goodwill, or I see a happy family at a restaurant, or just see my wife smile.  And then dammit, Annie Lennox and Al Green, I feel that surge of hope that I constantly had as a kid.  And I try to stuff it down and forget about it, but then I hear this song, and how can I not but have at least a glimmer of hope and happiness?  You two made a wonderful song.  One of my favorites of all time.  It was then and it still is.  So how cynical can I really be?

“Put A Little Love In Your Heart”

Think of your fellow man
Lend him a helping hand
Put a little love in your heart

You see it’s getting late
Oh, please, don’t hesitate
Put a little love in your heart

And the world
Will be a better place
And the wooooorld
Will be a better place
For you

And me

You just wait

And seeee-hee-hee

Another day goes by
And still the children cry
Put a little love in your heart

You want the world to know
We won’t let hatred grow
Put a little love in your heart

And the world (and the world)
Will be a better place
And the wooorld (and the world)
Will be a better place
For you (for you)
And me (and me)
You just wait (just wait)
And seeeee
Wait and seeeeeeeee, oooo-ooooo-oooooo!

Take a good look around (wa-oo)
And if you’re lookin’ down (wa-oo)
Put a little love in your heart (wa-oo)
Yeah yeah! (wa-oo)

I hope when you decide (wa-oo)
Kindness will be your guide (wa-oo)
Put a little love in your heart

And the world (and the world)
Will be a better place
And the wooorld (and the world)
Will be a better place
For you (for you)
And me (and me)
You just wait (just wait)
And seeeee
Ohhh!

(Put a little love in your heart)

(Put a little love in your heart)
All you’ve got ta do is just’a
