Radio XVII, side A, track 2: “Born To Be Wild” by Steppenwolf

Steppenwolf - Born To Be WildOh, Steppenwolf, are you KIDDING me with how awesome this song is?!?!  Sure, it’s been co-opted in so many commercials and movies and such at this point when they want to show how totally bad-ass someone is (or if they’re making fun of how not bad-ass they are) that this song has become a cliche. . .which is what I would say if I were super cynical.  Which I am.  But not about this song, Steppenwolf.  This is undiluted rock and roll with one of the best guitar intros ever.  I don’t know what you guys were thinking when you wrote this song and played it for the first time, I don’t know if it was tailor-made for “Easy Rider”, or if they plugged it in after the movie got made, but whatever, this song and that movie could not exist without each other.  “Easy Rider” would not be “Easy Rider” without “Born To Be Wild” and vice versa. . .

I take that back, Steppenwolf.  This song would survive just fine all on its own, but I think motorcycle and marijuana enthusiasts everywhere are very thankful that you teamed up with Billy and Captain America.  And so am I.

“Born To Be Wild”

<AWESOME Steppenwolf intro>

Get your motor runnin’

Head out on the highway

Lookin’ for adventure

In whatever comes our way

Yeah, darlin’, go make it happen

Take the world in a love embrace

Fire all of your guns at once and

Explode into space

I like smoke and lightnin’

Heavy metal thunder

Racin’ with the wiiind

And the feelin’ that I’m under

Yeah, darlin’, go make it happen

Take the world in a love embrace

Fire all of your guns at once and

Explode into space

Like a true
Nature’s child
We were born
Born to be wild

We can climb so high

I never
Wanna diiiiie

Born to be wiiiild

Born to be wiiiild

<awesome Steppenwolf jam>

Get your motor runnin’

In whatever comes our way

Yeah, darlin’, go make it happen

Take the world in a love embrace

Fire all of your guns at once and

  1. (hopefully I’m not posting twice – something glitched when I tried to submit previously).
    Yeah, this song rocks. But I’m partial to The Cult’s cover – absolutely kicks ass.

I totally have an opinion on this!
