Radio XVII, side A, track 6: “Kissing A Fool” by George Michael

George Michael - Kissing a FoolOh, George Michael, if lovin’ you is wrong I don’t wanna be right.  Seriously, I guess I just forgot how amazing a singer you were.  Granted, you kinda let some other stuff obscure your talent in the last few years, but every time I run across another of your songs that I was fortunate enough to tape off the radio, I’m reminded once again of just how big a star you were back in the day.  And I think this is probably my favorite of the bunch. . .wait, no, that one’s still coming up quite a ways down the line (I think), but this one comes in a close second, and I clearly enjoyed the hell out of it because I certainly recorded it enough (as we’ll find out over the coming months).  Maybe it’s because it’s so different from your other hits, which are dripping with sex and/or aggression, and this one’s just simple and sweet and heartbreaking and it really showcases that you can, indeed, sing.  Thanks for this one, George Michael.

“Kissing A Fool”

You are far

When I could have been your star
You listened to people
Who scared you to death, and from my heart
Strange that you were strong enough
To even make a start
But you’ll never find
Peace of mind
‘Til ya listen to your heart

People

You can never change the way they feel

Better let them do just what they will

For they will

If you let them steal
Your heart from you

People

Will always make a lover feel a fool

But you knew I loved you

We could have shown them all

We should have seen love through

Fooled me with the tears in your eyes

Covered me with kisses and lies

So ‘byyyye
But please don’t
Take my heeeeeeeeaaaaart, you are far

I’m never gonna be your star

I’ll pick up the pieces
And mend my heart

Maybe I’ll be strong enough
I don’t know where ta start
But I’ll never find
Peace of mind while I listen to my heart

People

You can never change the way they feel

Better let them do just what they will

For they will

If you let them steal
Your heeeart

And people

Will always make a lover
Feel a fool

But you knew I loved you

We could have shown them all

Naa-aa-aaa-aaa-aaa-aaa

But remember this, every other kiss
That you ever give, long as we both live
When you need the hand of another man, one you really can surrender with
I will wait for you like I always do
There’s something there
That can’t compare
With any other

You are far

When I could have been your star
You listened to people
Who scared you to death, and from my heart
Strange that I was wrong enough
To think you loved me, too

Guess you were kissing a fool

You must have
Been kissing

A fooooooool

  1. I agree. He has a killer voice. I wish he was still a star….but fucking Adam Lambert took over.

been thinking of this song for days. my husband had an affair and these words (some) seem timely. i know the song is instead about his lover not coming out of the closet for their love to grow… but it IS such a great song. almost applies to all kinds of heartbreak. thanks for posting!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one. It’s a great song that can cover a lot of different relationships as it sounds like you can attest. I hadn’t realized specifically what this song was actually about, so thanks for bringing that new insight to it for me.
