Radio XVII, side A, track 9: “He’s Back (The Man Behind The Mask)” by Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper - The Man Behind The MaskOh, Alice Cooper, I first want to say how awesome it is that this song happened to fall on the 13th of March, 2013.  Now, if only it would have been Friday, right?  You would think I’d have had more of an affinity for this particular series of films, Alice Cooper.  After all, that hockey-masked psycho shares my first name.  But here’s the thing, Alice Cooper.  When it came to scary movies, I was a HUUUUUUGE wimp.  I remember seeing the end of “Carrie” when I was 4 or 5, as well as the remake of “King Kong” with Jessica Lange and Jeff Bridges, and I’m not sure what my parents were thinking on those, because I spent many a night terrified that I would look up and see a giant gorilla’s eye peeping in my window.  After that, the first horror movie I watched was “The Lost Boys”.  Yeah, Alice Cooper.  I considered “The Lost Boys” a horror movie.  So you can see that I had a pretty weak constitution when it came to movies designed to scare  you.

It’s actually only been recently that I started watching the “Friday the 13th” movies and have sadly only made it halfway through so far, but I’ve been delighted to see so many stars in their early years, like Kevin Bacon, Cory Feldman, Crispin Glover and of course my beloved Judie Aronson.  I would like to tell you that I’m a much braver man when it comes to scary movies, Alice Cooper, but the truth is, I’m really not.  I can handle the Jasons and the Freddys and the Michael Myerses of the silver screen; they’re physically present and you’ve got a chance to run away possibly.  It’s the movies about the supernatural that I can’t do.  Because you can’t run away from a ghost, Alice Cooper.  You can’t lock your door and hide.  At minimum, you’re going to get slimed, as “Ghostbusters” taught us.  I tried recently to watch “Paranormal Activity”, but I was only able to make it through about ten minutes.  After the first night and they wake up and find their keys in the middle of the kitchen floor, I was done.  Forget it.  If that ghost is moving keys, it can only get worse.

But let’s forget about my general resemblance to a chicken.  This was my first introduction to you, Alice Cooper, and it was a surprisingly restrained introduction.  Don’t get me wrong, this song is great, but it really seems like you’re holding back on this song, which is crazy since it’s a song about Jason Voorhees.  Even so, it’s an awesome song with that creepy part about him crawling out of his hole and including the awesomely familiar “chi chi chi, ah ah ah”.  I think what I like the most about this one is that you’re pretty matter-of-fact about everything in this.  There are a few flourishes here and there, but overall this is a straight-up man-to-man conversation where you look us in the eye and say “Look, buddy, you’re getting killed tonight by a machete-wielding lunatic and that’s just the way it is.”  I appreciate the honesty, Alice Cooper.  Here’s hoping I survive long enough to listen to you again some day. . .

“He’s Back (The Man Behind The Mask)”

You’re with your baby
And you’re parked alone
On a summer night
You’re deep in love, but you’re deeper in the woods
You think you’re doin’ all right

Did you hear that voice
Did you see that face
Or was it just a dream
This can’t be real
That only happens, babe
On the movie screen

Oh, but he’s back
He’s the man behind the mask
And he’s out of control
He’s back
The man behind the mask
And he crawled
Out
Of
His
Hole

You’re swimmin’ with your girl
Out on Lovers’ Lake
And the wind blows cold
It chills your bones, but you’re still on the make
That’s a bad mistake

Ahh, but the moon was full
And you had a chance
To be all alone
But you’re not alone, this is your last dance
And your last romance

Yeah, ’cause he’s back
He’s the man behind the mask
And he’s out of control
He’s back
The man behind the mask
And he crawled
Out
Of
His
Hole

Chi chi chi, ah ah ah

Chi chi chi, ah ah ah

<awesome Alice Cooper jam>

Oh, if you see him comin’ get away if you can
Just keep on runnin’, run as fast as you can
He’s a dangerous, dangerous man
And he’s out tonight
And he’s watching you
And he knows your house
(Chi chi chi, ah ah ah)
No, don’t turn out the lights

Yeah, ’cause he’s back
He’s the man behind the mask
And he’s out of control
He’s back
The man behind the mask
And he’s after your soul
He’s back
He’s the man behind the mask
And he’s out of control
He’s back
The man behind the mask
And he’s after your soul
