Radio XVII, side A, track 12: “The Promise” by When In Rome

When In Rome - The PromiseOh, When In Rome,  ohhhh When In Rome. . .this song is a great example of  a belief I strongly hold dear, which is that there needs to be a law in place somewhere that lets a musician and/or band get some kind of guaranteed pension for the rest of their lives for creating an amazing song.  I’m not talking about royalties, which could potentially dry up.  I’m talking about “one hit wonders” like you, When In Rome (no offense, if that’s not a term you like).  Because When In Rome, this is one of my favorite songs ever.  I’ve got a story about this particular song which I’ll talk about the next time this song comes up (which it will, because you KNOW I recorded this more than once).

But back to my original supposition regarding a “one-hit wonder pension”.  When there’s a song that captures one’s heart as much as your song caught mine, and I’m sure so many others, it doesn’t seem fair that you’re limited to being paid by how many albums you’ve sold.  What about all the times I’ve caught myself humming this tune to myself?  What about all the awesomely gushy feelings this song causes?  There are tons of songs out there that flashed brightly and stuck in our collective unconscious, but the creators of said song had to go get a real job, and that doesn’t seem right to me.  Plus, it might eliminate the pressure for a one-hit wonder to try to duplicate the magic of their first hit, which very rarely works, and then becomes just sad.  I generally don’t believe in people resting on their laurels, but I would be fine paying a one-hit wonder tax so that you could rest on yours, When In Rome.

“The Promise”

If you need a friend

Don’t look to a stranger

You know in the end

I’ll always be there

And when you’re in doubt

And when you’re in danger

Take a look all around

And I’ll be there

I’m sorry, but I’m just thinkin’ of the right words to say (I promise you)
I know they don’t sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you)
But if you wait around a while, I’ll make you fall for me, I promise you
I promise you I will

When your day is through

And so is your temper

You know what ta do

I’m gonna always be there

Sometimes if I shout

It’s not what’s intended

These words just come out

With no gripe to bear

I’m sorry, but I’m just thinkin’ of the right words to say (I promise you)
I know they don’t sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you)
But if you wait around a while, I’ll make you fall for me, I promise you
I promise you

I’m sorry, but I’m just thinkin’ of the right words to say (I promise you)
I know they don’t sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you)
And if I had to walk the world and make you fall for me, I promise you
I promise you I will

<awesome When In Rome jam>

Gotta tell ya

Need ta tell ya

Gotta tell ya

I’ve gotta tell yaaaaa

I’m sorry, but I’m just thinkin’ of the right words to say (I promise you)
I know they don’t sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you)
But if you wait around a while, I’ll make you fall for me, I promise you
I promise you

I’m sorry, but I’m just thinkin’ of the right words to say (I promise you)
I know they don’t sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you)
And if I had to walk the world and make you fall for me, I promise you
I promise you I will

I will

I will
