Radio XVII, side B, track 1: “Bark At The Moon” by Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy Osbourne - Bark At The MoonOh, Ozzy Osbourne, hell YEAH!  Hell being the operative word here.  I wasn’t exposed to a lot of HEAVY heavy metal in my youth.  I heard peripherally about artists like yourself, Ozzy Osbourne, but it was strongly encouraged by my youth group that I not listen to that type of music.  The devil was very much in the details, especially the detailed i.e. explicit lyrics of music.  Growing up, becoming possessed by a demon was very much on the forefront of my mind, and next to the end of the world and not getting Christmas presents, was probably my #1 fear.  Actually, getting laughed at and made fun of was my #1 fear, but that happened fairly frequently, so whatever.  Point being, demonic possession was a very real threat to me, and to this day I’m not keen on watching any movies about exorcisms or the like (yes, Ozzy Osbourne, “The Exorcist” IS the scariest movie ever made).

So why it didn’t dawn on me that I was letting a little bit’o Satan sneak through my stereo speakers onto one of my tapes I couldn’t tell you, though he is supposed to be quite the trickster.  The thing is, Ozzy Osbourne, as with a lot of the songs of my youth, I didn’t really pay too much attention to the lyrics besides the chorus, and I just thought you singing “Bark at the moon” was swell.  I can guarantee you that if I’d realized what all those lyrics were saying, I would have not slept for a good week with images of me running around in the dark, mad and howling.  I forgot to mention, I was also really afraid of getting rabies, but we’ll talk about that another day.  Anyway, Ozzy Osbourne, that’s all in the past, and now I can appreciate this song for what it is, an AWESOME song that celebrates unholy evil.  And I’ll probably only lose two or three nights of sleep for typing that last sentence.

“Bark At The Moon”

Screams break the silence

Waking from the dead of niiight

Vengeance is boiling

He’s returned to kill the liiight

Then when he’s found who he’s looking for

Listen in awe and you’ll hear him

Bark at the moon

Ha ha ha haaa
Ha ha ha ha ha ha. . .

Years spent in torment

Buried in a nameless graaave

Now he has risen

Miracles would have to saaave

Those that the beast is looking for

Listen in awe and you’ll hear him

Bark at the moon

Heyyyy, yeah, bark at the moon

They cursed and buried him along with shame

And thought his timeless soul had gooone
In empty burning hell, unholy one

But he’s returned to prove them wrooong

So wrong

Ooo yeah baby

<awesome Ozzy jam>

Hhhhhhhhhhowling in shadows

Living in a lunar spell

He finds his Heaven

Spewing from the mouth of Hell

Those that the beast is looking for

Listen in awe and you’ll hear him

Bark at the moon

Heyyy, yeah, bark at the moon

Heyyy, yeah, bark at the moon

Oh, oh, yeah, bark at the moon

<awesome Ozzy jam>
