Radio XIXX, side A, track 3: “Two Hearts” by Phil Collins

Phil Collins - Two HeartsOh, Phil Collins, I adore this song for it’s peppy pop goodness, but when you really pay attention to the lyrics, it’s really kind of like something out of an Edgar Allan Poe story or maybe H.P. Lovecraft or Stephen King even.  It’s this whole “Two hearts living in just one mind” thing.  I don’t get it, Phil Collins.  I’ve heard of being of two minds about something, but I’ve never heard anything about two hearts beating in just one mind.  Besides this song, of course.  It just sounds like some kind of horror story where you’ve trapped this woman that you’re obsessed with inside your own brain and now you’ll be together forever.  Or maybe you’ve somehow died except that your consciousness is in her mind and slowly drive her mad.  Of course, it could be that when your minds meet hilarity ensues, a la the wonderful “All Of Me” with Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin, which would fit with this song’s tone more, but honestly, I think it would make a really creepy movie and this song would make it even creepier because of it’s upbeat happiness.  I’m sure these are all things you’ve thought about when writing and performing this song.  Great minds think alike, am I right?  Or is it two hearts living in just one mind think alike?  Dammit, Phil Collins, you’ve got me all turned around.

“Two Hearts”

<awesome Phil Collins intro>

Well there was no reason to believe
She’d always be there
But if you don’t put faith in what you’re believin’
It’s gettin’ ya nowhere

‘Cause it teaches you to never give up

Don’t look down
Just look up
‘Cause she’s always there behind you
Just to remind you

Two hearts
Livin’ in just one mind
You know it, two hearts
Livin’ in just one mind

<awesome Phil Collins jam>

Well there’s no easy way to
To understand it
So much of my love in her
And it’s like I planned it
And it teaches you to never let go
There’s so much love you’ll never know
She can reach you no matter how far

Wherever you are

Two hearts
Livin’ in just one mind
Beating together
‘Til the end of time
You know it, two hearts
Livin’ in just one mind
Together forever
‘Til the end of time
Oh

She knows (she knows)
There’ll always be
A special place in my heart
For her

She knows, she knows, she knows

Yeah she knows (she knows)
No matter how
Far apart we are
She knows

I’m always right there beside her with two hearts

Livin’ in just one mind
Beating together
Until the end of time

You know it, two hearts
But livin’ in just
Livin’ in just one mind (together forever)
Together forever
‘Til the end of time

You know it, two hearts
Livin’ in just
Livin’ in just one mind
Just one mind, just one mind
‘Til the end of time

  1. I love Phil Collins, but this is one of his songs that I never could get into. Maybe it’s because I’m just as confused as you about the “two hearts, one mind” thing. Nice post!
