Radio XIXX, side B, track 7: “Working For A Living” by Huey Lewis & The News

Huey Lewis and The News - Workin For a LivingOh, Huey Lewis & The News, there were a lot of things I hated about growing up on a farm.  Being out in the middle of nowhere, always having to be home because the cows had to get milked twice a day, no easy access to movies and fast food, and many other things that I now take for granted.  Probably the thing I hated the most was all the damn work.  Feeding the cows, walking the beans, baling the hay. . .blech!  Some kids my age loved it, Huey Lewis & The News, but they weren’t incredibly lazy like myself.

But I have to give my folks credit for raising me as they did, because I’ve come to learn as I’ve gotten older that while I’m lazy, I was instilled with a pretty strong work ethic which has served me well over the years.  In fact, I would come to learn that just being from the Midwest was a selling point as I entered the work force.  Don’t get me wrong, Huey Lewis & The News, I’m still pretty lazy, but my laziness is saved for when I’m at home.  The only thing I make sure to do every day is feed the dogs and the cats and clean out the litter boxes, and in the spring and summer, I’m fairly good about watering the trees and the flowers, but trust me, if I can put off ’til tomorrow what I should be getting done today, that is a motto I strongly believe in.  Well, I’d feel strongly about it if I wasn’t so damn lazy.

“Working For A Living”

Ooo, woah!

Some days won’t end ever
And some days pass on by, I’ll be workin’ here forever
At least until I die

Dammed if ya do
Dammed if ya don’t
I’m s’posed ta get a raise next week, ya know damn well I won’t

Workin’ for a livin’ (workin’)

Workin’ for a livin’ (workin’)

Workin’ for a livin’
Livin’ and a’workin’
I’m takin’ what they givin’ ’cause I’m workin’ for a livin’

Hey, I’m not complainin’ ’cause I really need the work
But hittin’ up my buddy’s got me feelin’ like a jerk
Hundred dollar car note, two hundred rent
I get a check on Friday
But it’s already spent

Workin’ for a livin’ (workin’)

Workin’ for a livin’ (workin’)

Workin’ for a livin’
Livin’ and a’workin’
I’m takin’ what they givin’ ’cause I’m workin’ for a livin’

(Woah woah, workin’ for a livin’)
(Woah woah, takin’ what they givin’)
(Woah woah, workin’ for a livin’)
(Woah woah-ohhhh!)

Busboy, bartender, ladies of the night
Grease monkey, ex-junky, winner of the fight
Walkin’ on the streets
It’s really all the same
Sellin’ souls, rock n’ roll, any other game

Workin’ for a livin’ (workin’)

Workin’ for a livin’ (workin’)

Workin’ for a livin’
Livin’ and a’workin’
I’m takin’ what they givin’ ’cause I’m workin’ for a livin’
Workin’ for a livin’
Livin’ and a’workin’
I’m takin’ what they givin’ ’cause I’m workin’ for a livin’
Workin’ for a livin’
Livin’ and a’workin’
