Radio XXXI, side B, track 11: “Girl You Know It’s True” by Milli Vanilli

Milli Vanilli - Girl You Know It's TrueOh, Milli Vanilli, I have all  kinds of neuroses and fears and hang-ups.  Growing up, two of my biggest fears were people laughing at me and people not liking me.  As you can imagine based on what I looked like back then, the problem of people laughing at me was a clear and present danger.  I got laughed at a lot.

There was one time when a group of pretty girls even barked at me, presumably because I was as attractive as an ugly dog.  Turns out they were doing it to get the attention of my friend I was walking with.  Not saying they didn’t still think I was unattractive, they made it clear that they really did think that, but since my friend and I were horny teenage boys, we went over to talk to them anyway.  He concurred with them, mostly because he was hoping one of them would kiss him, but probably also because he’d always secretly believed it.  All is fair in teenage boys trying to get a little.

So you couple the fear of getting laughed at with the fear of people not liking you, and you have a recipe for a mess of a person.  High school got better for me after I eased out of a decade-long awkward period, but during all that time, when I’d get bullied or snickered at, I took it all with a smile.  Because as insane as it was, I didn’t want the torturers to dislike the tortured, even though they clearly loathed me.  As a result of all this, I developed a weird mix of the ability to laugh at myself coupled with a fairly self-righteous ego, blended with a laid-back, easygoing personality, all deliciously swirled together with some suppressed rage issues.

What’s my point here, Milli Vanilli?  Well, it’s because you can’t listen to one of your songs, one of your GREAT songs, without thinking about all the craziness that happened when it turned out you guys weren’t actually singing these songs.  You went from being the hottest musical act out there to becoming the punchline to a pop culture joke for perpetuity.  I’m not saying that you didn’t bring a lot of it on yourselves, but as someone who got barked at by a small group of stupid high school girls and remembering what that felt like, I can only begin to imagine what being barked at by the entire world feels like.

As someone who writes what is for all intents and purposes a pop culture blog, I’ll be the first to say that we put way too much importance on pop culture.  Which would explain all the righteous indignation that occurred when it was discovered that Milli Vanilli was a sham.  Even though it really wasn’t.  Since the music was real.  It just had more attractive people showcasing it.  But whatever.  The point is, the music was and is great, and if the people making it are cool with the arrangement, who cares whose face is on the cover of the cassette tape?

“Girl You Know It’s True”

<awesome Milli Vanilli jam>

I’m in love with you, girl, ’cause you’re on my mind
You’re the one I think about most every time
And when you pack a smile in everything you do
Don’t you understand, girl, this love is true?
You’re soft, succulent, so sweet and thin
That’s kind of like a vision
Upon your skin
It lightens up my day, and that’s also true
Together we’re one, separated we’re two
To make you all mine, all mine is my desire
‘Cause you contain a quality, you that I admire
To put it plain and simple, you rule my world so try ta understand

I’m in love, girl

I’m so in love, girl

I’m just in love, girl

And this is true

Girl, you know it’s true

Ooo, ooo, ooo, I love you

Yes, you know it’s true

Ooo, ooo, ooo, I love you

Girl, you know it’s truue
My loooove
Is for you
Girl, you know it’s truuue
My loooove
Is for you

This is some sort’a thing, girl, I can’t explain
My emotions starts up when I hear your name
Maybe your sweet, sweet voice
Would ring in my ear
Then delay my system when you are near
Come with your positive emotion, love-makin’, enjoyin’
That’s for me to bust, it’s like a girl and a boy
These feelings I get I often wonder why
So I thought I might discuss this, girl, just you and I
Now what you’re wearing I don’t care, as I’ve said before
No reason that I like you, girl, just for what you are
If I said I’d think about it, you rule my world so try to understand

I’m in love, girl

I’m so in love, girl

I’m just in love, girl

And this is true

Girl, you know it’s true

Ooo, ooo, ooo, I love you

Yes, you know it’s true

Ooo, ooo, ooo, I love you

Girl, you know it’s truuue
My loooove
Is for you

<awesome Milli Vanilli jam>

I’m in love wichoo, girl girl girl girl girl

I’m in love wichoo
