Radio XXXII, side B, track 9: “The Different Story (World Of Lust And Crime)” by Peter Schilling

Peter Schilling - The Different StoryOh, Peter Schilling, as I was looking through my tape collection, I got to this track and I saw the handwritten title scrawled on the cassette insert and I was thinking to myself “‘Different Story’?  I absolutely don’t remember this song at all.”  And then I pushed Play on my stoic old boombox, and as soon as that flute started playing, I was like “Oh my God!  Yesssssss!  I LOVE this song!”  At the time, I don’t think I completely understood what exactly it was that drew me to this song.  But as soon as I played it this time out, I knew EXACTLY what the pull of this song was.

“The Neverending Story.”

There’s something about this song that has the same kind of feel as the title track for one of the movies that had the biggest impact on me as a kid.  If you haven’t heard the song or seen the movie, Peter Schilling, as soon as you’re done reading this post, that’s exactly what you’re going to do next.

My wife and I were just talking about the movie the other night after she read an article about the death of Artax and how it traumatized a generation.  You should go read that article, Peter Schilling, because true dat.  That movie messed me up for years to come.  It was uplifting and horrifying and wonderful and scary and depressing.  It’s really one of the best movies ever made, if you want to know the truth.  My wife and I still quote from it pretty regularly, particularly “They look like big, strong hands” when I lament that I don’t have rugged workman’s hands like my dad.  I have issues, Peter Schilling.  And some of those issues are a direct result of one of the best fantasy films ever made.

But we’ll talk more about the movie some other time, Peter Schilling.  The point is, this song has that same otherworldly sound as “The Neverending Story” song.  And having had a few decades to ruminate on it, it kinda sounds like it’s got a little bit of the “Mortal Kombat” title track mixed in, too.  Or maybe “Mortal Kombat” swiped from you since this song came out way earlier.  Regardless, all three songs are pretty flippin’ great, Peter Schilling.  Thanks for reminding me.

“The Different Story (World Of Lust And Crime)”

<awesome Peter Schilling jam>

I’m so lonely
On my way
Waiting for a better day

Only one thing left behind
A world of lust and crime

There’s no place for me to hide
I don’t know what’s wrong or right

Pain and sorrow in my mind
A world of lust and crime

See the wise man in a graveyard
Scream and cried a different story
Lonely people in his old park
Know the answer just for everythiiiing

Love
Turns a friendly card
With a different story, it’ll open your heart forever, love
Is a wondrous game
You don’t have to worry ’cause it’s easy to plaaay

<awesome Peter Schilling jam>

There’s a chance for me and you
Making all our dreams come true

Trust in love and you won’t find
A world of lust and crime

See the wise man in a graveyard
Scream and cried a different story
Lonely people in his old park
Know the answer just for everythiiiiing

Love
Turns a friendly card
With a different story, it’ll open your heart forever, love
Is a wondrous game
You don’t have to worry ’cause it’s easy to plaaay

<awesome Peter Schilling jam>

Noooo
Noooooo
Nooooooo
Nooooooooooooooooooooo
See the wise man in a graveyard
Scream and cried a different story
Lonely people in his old park
Know the light of hope and glory
