Radio XXXVI, side A, track 8: “Big Daddy Weekend promo”

Big DaddyOh, KISD FM, your promo for winning the new “Big Daddy” album by John COUGAR Mellencamp was a good excuse to say “Happy Father’s Day!” a few weeks early.  My dad and I didn’t always see eye to eye when I was younger, and we had our fair share of disagreements, but as I’m passing through the same years that he once did, I’m starting to empathize with him more and more every day.  Raising a family while also trying to raise crops and cattle is no small thing.  I don’t have to worry about any of those things and it’s still hard to get out of bed sometimes.

When I was a kid, there were times when I was convinced that there was no way that I wasn’t adopted.  I was just too different from either of my parents to possibly have the same genetic material.  Well, as I’m closing in on 40, there is no doubt that I’m my father’s son.  I apparently even answer the phone exactly like him, to the point where my wife sometimes becomes confused as to who she called.  We talk usually once a week, my dad and I, and while we don’t always have a lot to say, we’re clearly cut from the exact same cloth.  We both agree that you can’t predict the weather, that weather people are a joke, that you can never have too much rain or you can always have too much rain, that Minnesota gets really cold and Texas is too damn hot, and that the weather is crazy.  Most of our conversations revolve around meteorology, KISD FM.  But we both grew up on a farm, where the weather determined your livelihood.  Which is why I’m not a farmer.  But I’ve learned to respect the weather, just as I’ve learned to respect my dad.  And I’ve come to appreciate that in a world that feels more like a maelstrom sometimes, it’s good to know I’ve got someone who can be its calm eye.
