Radio XXXVIII, side B, track 6: “Look Away” by Chicago

Chicago - Look AwayOh, Chicago, I know EXACTLY why I recorded this song.  Oh, sure, it’s clear that I loved it since I recorded it so many times already, but this particular track turned out to be a “pure” recording.  I don’t remember taping this particular song at this particular moment in time, but I can guarantee you that when I heard that distinct piano tinkling out its beautiful intro to one of my favoritest songs, I bet I practically broke the Play and Record buttons, I pressed them so hard in my excitement.  It was always exciting to get a song that didn’t have any DJs talking over it, but to capture THIS song of all songs, the song that I listened to ad nauseam in a lovesick haze, the song that defined my masochistic view of love and relationships for the first couple decades of my life. . .well, it was a pretty big deal to me at the time, Chicago.  And if I were a more cynical man, I could scoff at my younger self putting so much importance on such a silly, superfluous thing as taping a song off the radio, taping the SAME song multiple times off the radio, need I remind you. . .well, I am a cynical man.  Sometimes.  But I still get what I was trying to do way back when, even if it was and is a little silly and superfluous.  But if nothing else, it’s given me another excuse to listen to this wonderful song yet again.

“Look Away”

Well, ya called me up this mornin’

Told me ’bout the new love ya found
Said, “I’m happy for ya.

I’m really happy for ya.”

Found someone else
I guess I won’t be comin’ ’round

I guess it’s over, baby

It’s really over, baby, woah-oh-oh

And from what you’re sayin’

I know you’ve gotten over me

It’ll never be

The way it used to be

So if it’s gotta be this waaay

Don’t worry, baby, I can take the news okay

But if ya see me walkin’ by
And the tears are in my eye
Look away
Baby, look away

And if we meet on the street some day
And I don’t know what to say
Look away
Baby, look away

Don’t look at me
I don’t wanchoo ta see me this waaay

Wooo-ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo-oooo

When we both agreed as lovers
We were better off as friends
That’s how it had ta be
Yeah, that’s how it had ta be

I tell you I’m fine
But sometimes I just pretend

Wish you were holdin’ me
Wish you were still holdin’ me, oh-oh-oh

I just never thought
That I would be replaced so soon

I wasn’t prepared
Ta hear those words from ya

I know I wanted to be freeee
Yeah, baby, this is how we wanted it ta be

But if ya see me walkin’ by
And the tears are in my eye
Look away
Baby, look away

And if we meet on the street some day
And I don’t know what to say
Look away
Baby, look awaaay

Don’t look at me
I don’t wanchoo to see me this waaay

<awesome Chicago jam>

If ya see me walkin’ by
And the tears are in my eye
Look away
Baby, look away

And if we meet on the street some day
And I don’t know what to say
Look away
Baby, look awaaay

Don’t look at me
I don’t wanchoo to see me this
If ya see me walkin’ by
And the tears are in my eye
Look away
Baby, look away

Don’t look at me
I don’t wanchoo to see me this way
Well, ya called me up this mornin’

Told me ’bout the new love ya found
I said, “I’m happy for ya.

I’m really happy for ya.”
