Radio XXXIXL, side B, track 1: “Sexy Sadie” by The Beatles

The Beatles - Sexy SadieOh, The Beatles, even though I recorded this song in junior high, this song always reminds me of college.  As I’ve made pretty clear already, even though I have a music blog, I’m not actually very well-versed in music.  And as my brother can attest, I developed a regrettable aversion to “oldies” when I was in high school, mostly because my brother enjoyed songs by you guys and The Doors and Elvis and the like, and I thought I was being cool by embracing acts like Milli Vanilli and Dino.  Ahh, the folly of youth.  Of course, I understand now that my brother was the one with the better taste in music, and was and is actually better at most things than me to this day, but that’s a post for a different day or days.  Right now, I’m talking about The Beatles and college.

I remember pretty clearly (which is saying something, since I spent most of my college days in an alcoholic haze) the day that one of my roommates and I were in our dorm’s laundry room hanging out, waiting for out clothes to wash, probably only the third time I’d ever done laundry in my life since my mom had saved me from that particular task up until then, and he brought his boom box with him and put in “The White Album” and we listened to “Rocky Raccoon” and “Happiness Is A Warm Gun” and “Revolution #9” and he made me really listen to it, not just as background noise while our clothes were tumbling behind us, but as MUSIC, man, real goddamn music!  He was a pretty hardcore fan of you guys, The Beatles, and his enthusiasm for you was infectious.  Before that day, I only really knew you as the loveable moppets from “The Ed Sullivan Show” but after that fateful day in a grungy college laundry room, my roommate deepened both my respect for your music and regret for sneering at my brother’s clearly superior musical tastes.  Thanks for being The Beatles, The Beatles.
