Radio XXXIXL, side B, track 8: “Once Bitten Twice Shy” by Great White

Great White - Once Bitten Twice ShyOh, Great White, so I’m guessing things got pretty awkward between you and your drummer after this song came out, yes?  I mean, here you are singing a song about how the guy almost accosts a young girl, how you presumably beat him up when you catch him trying to get across her “state line”, and then you go on to write a song about it where he’s got to keep the beat for it.  That is one complicated relationship, Great White.  Now that I think about it, it had to have been pretty awkward way before this song hit the radio.  What was that first practice like, I wonder.  Did you maybe not have the lyrics with you and just had the rest of the song, and everybody was like, “That’s a really great song, man!”  And then maybe during practices did you maybe change the lyrics up a little?  Maybe sang something like “Until there was that summer on a Greyhound bus”?  Your drummer happily drumming away, thinking how this girl you’re singing about sounds really hot and also kinda familiar.  And then maybe you laid all the other tracks down first and came in later to sing the actual lyrics?  So by the time this song hit the airwaves, your drummer was none the wiser.  Until maybe he was chilling on that grey tour bus and decides to listen to it but by then it’s too late.  And now he’s got to just grin and bear it while all the groupies fling themselves at everyone but him, for obvious reasons.

I don’t know what exactly happened on that grey tour bus, Great White, and I like to imagine that you took some artistic license at the expense of your drummer, although why you’d want to paint him as a dangerous perv leads me to believe that either he is one or you really don’t like him.  In any event, I’m assuming that he has since demanded some kind of first-look deal before you guys make any more songs together.  And a separate tour bus.

“Once Bitten Twice Shy”

<awesome Great White jam>

Well, the times are gettin’ haaard for yooou, little girl
I’m a hummin’ and a strummin’
All over God’s world

You can’t remember when you gotcho last meal
And you don’t know just how a woman feels

You didn’t know what rock and roll was
Until ya met my drummer on a grey tour bus

I got there
In the nick of time
Before he got his hands across ya state line, yeah

<awesome Great White jam>

Now it’s the middle of the night on the open road
The heater don’t work and it’s oh so cold

Ya lookin’ tired
Ya lookin’ kinda beat
Rhythm of the street sure knocks you off ya feet

Ya didn’t know how rock and roll looked
Until ya caughtcha sister with the guys from the group
Halfway home
In the parkin’ lot
By the look in her eye
She was givin’ what she got
Said myyy, myyy, myyy, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

Myyy, myyy, myyy, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

Myyy, myyy, myyy, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

Woman, you’re a mess, gonna die in ya sleep
There’s blood on my amp
And my Les Paul’s beat

Can’t keep ya home
Ya messin’ around
My best friend told me you’re the best lick in town

Ya didn’t know that rock and roll burned
So ya bought a candle and ya lived and ya learned

You got the rhythm
You got the speed
Mama’s little baby likes it short and sweet
I said myyy, myyy, myyy, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

Myyy, myyy, myyy, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

Myyy, myyy, myyy, I’m once bitten, twice shy, baby

All right!

<awesome Great White jam>

I didn’t know ya had a rock an’ roll record
‘Til I saw ya picture on another guy’s jacket
You told me I was the only one

But look atcha now, it’s dark and you’re gone
Ah myyy, myyy, myyy, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

Myyy, myyy, myyy, I’m once bitten, twice shy, baby

Myyy, myyy, myyy, I’m once bitten, twice shyyy, baby
