Radio XL, side A, track 8: “Morning song”

schoolOh, KISD FM, I totally relate to the DJ’s silly but fairly accurate nervous breakdown regarding getting up and going to work.  And the song that follows makes me want to have one of my own.  I’m a man of habit, so in general I don’t mind having a routine.  I’m pretty content to go into auto-pilot, sometimes for months at a time.  There’s nothing wrong with monotony if you don’t think about it.

But every few months or so while I’m in the shower in the AM after letting the dogs out and feeding the cats and checking my blog stats and a few of my other morning routines, I’ll have a small moment of realizing that I’ve just done the same thing for several months in a row and an impending feeling of doom descends on me along with the lukewarm water (our water heater kinda sucks) and I wonder “Is this it?  Is this who I am and what I do?  Did I just sleepwalk through half a year?”  The answer to all those questions is generally yes.

Luckily, the shower seems to be the only place where I have any real self-awareness, so by the time I’ve combed my hair and brushed my teeth, just as that murderously chipper strong instructs us (although I don’t eat breakfast, never have, unless I’m planning on taking a nap right afterwards), I’ve forgotten that I had a naked existential crisis just ten minutes before.

Sometimes I have little flashes at work or while driving in the car, sometimes even when I’m writing this blog (!), that my life is one tiny, inconsequential mote quickly drowned in the unrelenting river of time (thanks a lot, “Cosmos”).  And that’s when I have to tell myself to shake it off and ignore that quiet, too-confident voice in the back of my head telling me it’s all for naught and get back to eating too much or watching too much TV or reading too many comic books or listening to too much music taped off the radio (nevah!).

The point is, KISD FM, that life is like a cassette tape, and when you get to the end of one side, you’ve got to flip it over and hit “Play” again, and just hope that you taped something good.

“Morning song”

Wash your face (wash your face)
Comb your hair (comb your hair)
Before ya come down to breakfast

Your hands are sure to shake hand with someone whose hands are sure to be clean

Your hair is where your face begins and your face is the very first place to be seen

(Scrub your hands) scrub your hands
(Wash your face) wash your face
(Comb your hair) comb your hair
Before ya go out each morning
