Radio XLII, side B, track 1: “Modern Love” by David Bowie

David Bowie - Modern LoveOh, David Bowie, thanks for showing up on my track list again.  As we’ve discussed, I’ve never been able to completely get into your music, but every time you show up on here, I feel like this blog gets a tad more street cred for the fact that I had the foresight to record your music off the radio so we could discuss it 20-some years later.  We’ll ignore the fact that I likely didn’t record this song because I was cool and was a total Bowie fan and more for the simple fact that I didn’t have this song recorded already.  In other words, this song less represents my progressive music tastes and instead represents my OCD nature.  But whatever, David Bowie, let’s just focus on the fact that I recorded this song and it’s a great song and I’m a cooler person for having recorded it and listened to it and enjoyed it, regardless of the reasons behind it.  I won’t lie to you, David Bowie, I don’t really have any more idea about what this song is about than I did when I first recorded it.  Actually, that’s not true.  I’m sure when I first recorded it, I thought it was an upbeat but sad song about how you’ll never be able to fall in love.  Because back in the day, my only frame of reference with music was that it had to be about some aspect of love and/or rocking and rolling.  These days, I know that a lot of the songs I loved back in the day were about far more than what I thought they were about.  And I especially know that if it’s a David Bowie song, it’s absolutely about more than what I thought it was about.  Or what I think it’s about.  I’m older, David Bowie, not necessarily wiser.

So anyway, David Bowie, thanks for stopping by again and making an appearance at my ongoing blog party.  We were already having a good time, but now that people know you might drop in, you’ve made this shindig totally A-list.

“Modern Love”

I know when to go out

And when to stay in

Get things done

I catch a paper boy
But things don’t really change
I’m standing in the wind
But I never wave bye-bye

Buuut I try

I try

There’s no sign of life
It’s just the power to charm
I’m lyin’ in the rain
But I never wave bye-bye

Buuut I try

I try

Never gonna fall for (modern love)
Walks beside me (modern love)
Walks on byyyy (modern love)
Gets me to the chuuuurch ooon tiiime (church on time)
Terrifies me (church on time)
Makes me party (church on time)
Puts my trust in Goood aaand maaan

(God and man)
No confessions (God and man)
No religion (God and man)
Don’t believe in mooodeeern looove

<awesome David Bowie jam>

It’s not really work
It’s just the power to charm
Still standin’ in the wind
But I never wave bye-bye

Buuut I try

I try

Never gonna fall for (modern love)
Walks beside me (modern love)
Walks on byyyy (modern love)
Gets me to the chuuuurch ooon tiiime (church on time)
Terrifies me (church on time)
Makes me party (church on time)
Puts my trust in Goood aaand maaan
