Radio XLV, side A, track 12: “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds

Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me)Oh, Simple Minds, what a serendipitous way to end 2014, eh?  I didn’t plan for this to be the song that closed out the year, but here you are and it pretty much sums up what this blog is all about.  It also used to be one of my biggest fears, to be forgotten.  It ranked right up there with going to hell and demonic possession.  It’s probably been one of the single biggest motivators as to why I’ve done pretty much anything my whole life.  I wanted to leave something behind so that when I was gone, there’d be a record of my existence.  The idea that I could die and there would be no one to ever know that I existed scared the hell out of me.  So I wrote comic books and screenplays and letters to people and I got my name in the local paper now and again and eventually I started blogging so that there would be a trail that shouted “I was here!  I existed!  I meant something!”  Well, I don’t know that that’s such a big concern for me anymore.  In the last few decades, as I’ve read more and just lived more, I’ve realized that people die all the time and are quickly forgotten.  Throughout history whole families have been wiped out and that’s that.  Hell, Simple Minds, friends and family members of my own have passed away, and while I haven’t forgotten them, I realized after they were gone that I didn’t really know much about their lives.

Craig Ferguson, on one of his last shows on “The Late Late Show”, said something that really struck me.  He said that we were basically a hyphen between two dates.  That sums things up pretty well.  Frankly, Simple Minds, ever since I watched “Cosmos” this year, I’ve felt that the life of a whole planet, much less my own life, doesn’t really amount to a hill of beans in the grand scheme of things.  And yet I still (grudgingly) get out of bed every morning.  I’ve pre-scheduled posts so that even if I’m gone there’ll be a song a day showing up here through at least 2020.  I still plan on reading all of my old Spider-Man comics and getting completely caught up on all the “Star Trek” episodes and “Star Wars” novels (even though the new movie negates all of those novels, but whatevs, JJ Abrams).  So whether it’s simple self-preservation or a fundamental fear of death and/or the afterlife, I’m still making plans.

But when I do shuffle off, even if it’s before this post hits the internets, and if I’m not even worth a footnote in the history of all, that’s all right, Simple Minds.  I saved a few animals, I made some people laugh, I loved my wife, I got to geek out over many geeky things, and I got to listen to great songs like this one.  Not bad for a hyphen.

“Don’t You (Forget About Me)”

Hey, hey, hey, heeey

Ooooooo wooooah

Wonchoo
Come see about me

I’ll be alone
Dancin’, you know it, baby

Tell me
Your troubles and doubts
Givin’ everything inside and out, and

Love’s strange
Surreal in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on

Slow change may pull us apart

When the light gets inta your heart, baaaby
Donchoo

Forget about me

Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t

Donchoo

Forget about me

Will you stand abooove me
Look my waaaay, never love me
Rain keeps fallin’, rain keeps fallin’ down, down, down

Will you recogniiize me
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps fallin’, rain keeps fallin’ down, down, down, down

Hey, hey, hey, heeey

It’s my feeling we’ll win in the end, I won’t
Harm you or touch your defenses
Vanity
