Radio XLV, side B, track 7: “When I See You Smile” by Bad English

Bad English - When I See You SmileOh, Bad English, for the rest of time, or at least for the rest of my life, this song will forever remind me of hangovers, leather baseball caps and mental illness.  I didn’t know that would be the case at the time I recorded this song, Bad English, and while I enjoyed this song immensely, it didn’t have the same impact as some other love songs did during my radio-taping years.  But during my freshman year of college, I acquired a CD called “From The Heart”, which I’ve talked about a couple times already.  And after I’d also acquired a taste for alcohol, which did wonders for my undiagnosed anxiety and depression issues, I would spend days lying on my bed in my dorm room, with a black leather cap covering my face (that’s right, Bad English, I wore a black leather cap; no logos on it or anything, just all black, all leather, all cap, and all class) as I nursed my latest morning-after-drunken-debauchery illness and felt my mind slipping into a blackness as black as my black leather cap.  You can imagine what a joy it was to room with me, Bad English.  Yes, I realize I was THAT roommate.

And this was the first song on that CD.  So as soon as I heard the opening chords of this one, I knew I was in for some sweet, sweet romantic pain.  I would listen to that CD on repeat for time out of mind.  None of us are happy that I’m still paying off student loans that partially funded my self-destructive tendency to drink copiously and then listen to ’80s love ballads copiously.  But it is what it is, Bad English.  So when I hear this song now, I’m filled with a mix of nostalgia and love and more than a little shame at the hours and days and years I wasted feeling sorry for myself one shot or glass or bottle at a time.  And I feel really bad that not only was I THAT roommate, but I also very likely ruined this and the other songs on that CD for my roommates.  Because while for me it signaled the welcoming embrace of your music, for them it signaled more self-pitying bullshit.

And the thing is, Bad English, all the pining I did in the blackness of that cap, all that wishing to find someone who could make me feel the way this song did, there was no way anyone in their right mind would go for a guy who spent most of his college years in a fetal position next to a boombox.  Maybe if I’d drank a little less Karkov and attended a few more classes, I would have been able to share my love of this song with someone instead of wallowing in the fact that I was listening to it all alone.

But what’s done is done, Bad English.  I survived college, with a few less friends and a few less brain cells, and here we are, listening to this wonderful song yet again.  And the good news is that this time when I heard it, I instantly recognized that I’d married the girl who helps me face the world with her smile.  And her laugh.  And even her frown.  So thanks for all the bad times, Bad English, and for the good times to come.

“When I See You Smile”

Sometimes I wonder
How I’d ever make it through

Through this world without havin’ you

I just wouldn’t have a clue

‘Cause sometimes it seems like this wooorld’s closin’ in on me

And there’s no way of breakin’ free

And then I see you reach for me

Sometimes I wanna give up
Wanna give in
I wanna quit the fiiiight
And then I see ya, baby
And everything’s all right

Everything’s all right

When I seeeee yooou smiiile

I can face the world

Ohhhhh
You know I can do anything

When I seeeee yooou smiiile

See a ray of light

Ohhhhh
See it shinin’ right through the rain

When I see you smiiile

Baby, when I see you smile
At me

Oh yeah

Baby, there’s nothin’
In this woooorld that could ever do

What the touch of your hand can do

It’s like nothin’ that I ever knew

Heeey

And when the rain is fallin’
I don’t feel it
‘Cause ya heeere with me now

And one look atcha, baby

Is all I’ll ever need

Is all I’ll ever need

When I seeeee yooou smiiile

I can face the world

Ohhhhh
You know I can do anything

When I seeeee yooou smiiile

I see a ray of light

Ohhhhh
I see it shinin’ right through the rain

When I see you smile, baby

Baby, when I
See you smile at me

Sometimes I wanna give up

I wanna give in

I wanna quit the fight

Then one look atcha, baby

And everything’s all right

Hey
Everything’s all right

Sooo riiiiiiiiight

<awesome Bad English jam>

When I seeeee yooou smiiile

I can face the world

Ohhhhh
You know I can do anything

Yeeeah

When I seeeee yooou smiiile

I see a ray of light

Ohhhhh
I see it shinin’ right through the rain

Yeeeah

When I seeeee yooou smiiile

Yeah, I can face the world

Ohhhhh
You know I can do anything now

When I see you smiiiile

Oh yeah

Baby, when I see you

Smiiiiiile

Smile at me
