Radio XLVII, side B, track 2: “Sowing The Seeds Of Love” by Tears For Fears

Tears For Fears - Sowing The Seeds Of LoveOh, Tears For Fears, what a great song to capture as a “pure” song!  If there’s a song that deserves to be listened to uncut with no DJs and no ads or anything spoiling it, this is it.  Last time this song came up, I admitted that I really don’t know exactly what this song is about.  Politics in England, I guess, and probably something about Maggie Thatcher and that you didn’t like her.  Frankly, Tears For Fears, my outrage meter burned out years ago, so it’s hard for me to get worked up over craziness that’s going on today, much less stuff that happened 30 years ago.  But let’s not lament my exponentially growing apathy, Tears For Fears.  Let’s celebrate this song instead.  After listening to it the last time, and then getting to listen to it again, it really hit me how this song is very much a musical journey.  It feels like there are some very distinct sections in it that SHOULD sound disjointed but because you’re awesome, they fit together perfectly.  If one were to play someone clips of different portions of this song, a lot of people would be hard-pressed to guess that all the clips were from the same song.

I’m just rambling, Tears For Fears, trying to sound like I have something intelligent to say about music, but I’m pretty sure that I’ve proven on more than one occasion that I don’t.  Suffice it to say, I’ve always found this song magical, and now that I know all the lyrics, I’ve discovered one of my favorites:  “Read it in the books, in the crannies and the nooks, there are books to read”.  Why the American Library Association hasn’t adopted this song as their theme song, I don’t know, because that’s one of the most fun ways to say that reading is awesome that I’ve ever heard.

“Sowing The Seeds Of Love”

High time we made a stand and shook up the views’a the common man, the love train
Rides from coast ta coast
D.J.’s the man we love the most

Couldja be, couldja be squeaky clean, and smash any hope of democracy, as the headline
Says ya free ta choose
There’s egg on ya face and mud on ya shoes
One’a these days they gonna call it the bluuues, yeah, yeah
(Sowing the seeeeeds of loooove) anything is possible
(Seeeeds of loooove) when ya sowing the seeds of love (Sowing the seeds)
(Sowing the seeeeeds of loooove) anything is possible
(Seeeeds of looooove) sowing the seeds of love (sowing the seeds)
I spy tears in their eyes, they look to the skies for some kind’a divine intervention
Food goes ta waste
So nice ta eat, so nice ta taste
Politician granny with ya high ideals, have you no idea how the majority feels so without
A promised land
We fools to the rules of a government plan
Kick out the style, bring back the jaaaaaaaam
(Sowing the seeeeeeeds of looooove) anything
(Seeeeeds of looooove)
(Sowing the seeds)
(Sowing the seeeeeds of loooove, seeeeds of looove)
Sowing the seeeeeds
The birds and the bees

My girlfriend and meee

In looove

<awesome Tears for Fears jam>

Feel the beat

Talk about it

If you’re a worried maaan

Then shout about it

Open hearts

Feel about it

Open miiinds

Think about it

Everyone

Read about it

Everyooone

Scream about it

Everyone (everyoooone, yeah, yeah)
Everyone (everyoooone) read about it, read about it
Read it in the books, in the crannies and the nooks, there are books ta reeeeead

(Sowing the seeds)
(Sowing the seeds of looove)
We’re sowing the seeds
Sowing the seeds

Sowin’ the seeds of love

Sowin’ the seeds
Sowin’ the seeeeeds of love

Sowing the seeeeds of love

(Mister England sowing the seeds of love)

Time
To eat all your woooords
Swallow your priiide
Open your eyyyes

Time
To eat all your woooords
Swallow your priiide
Open your eyyyes

High time we made a stand and shook up the views’a the common man, the love train
Rides from coast ta coast

Every minute of every hour
I love a sunflower
And I belieeeeve
In love power

Looove power

Looooooooooooove power

(Sowing the seeeeds of loooove, seeeeds of loooove)
(Sowing the seeds)
(Sowing the seeeeds of loooove, the seeeeds of looooove) sowing the seeds
(Sowing the seeds)
(Sowing the seeeeds of looooove, seeeeds of loooove)
Sowing the seeds
An end ta need

And the politics of greed

With love
(Sowing the seeeeds of loooove, seeeeds of loooove)
(Sowing the seeeeds)
