Radio XLVII, side B, track 7: “Sugar Daddy” by Thompson Twins

Thompson Twins - Sugar DaddyOh, Thompson Twins, can you believe it’s been almost three years and 40 tapes since we last heard a song by you?!?!?!  That doesn’t even seem right.  Well, the good news is that even though it’s been like forever since we’ve been able to chat, here you are with a brand new song that’s still as great today as it was when I recorded it off the radio all those years ago.  I remembered the “Na na na na na na na na” immediately, followed by pretty much the rest of the song, although back then, I didn’t really know what a sugar daddy was.  I think I thought it was a candy.  Wait, I think it IS a candy, right?  Well, back then I’m pretty sure I thought this song was referring to the candy.  If you would have told me back then that this actually has quite a bit of sexual overtones, my response would have been “Sexual what now?”  I would have definitely wanted to know more, since you said “sexual” and all, but even if you’d explained it to me, I still wouldn’t have gotten it.  For one thing, I don’t think I’d have believed in the reality of a sugar daddy.  That would have seemed like something out of a movie.  After all, relationships were always supposed to be about true love, right, Thompson Twins?  To include money as any part of the relationship between two people just seemed beyond crass.  Plus I’m pretty sure I didn’t know what a geisha was, which is probably why I didn’t remember that part of the song, because I likely thought that was just a made-up word.  Basically I’m realizing I just knew the chorus on this one, Thompson Twins.  But it’s a great chorus.  Such a good chorus that I totally forgive the pervy, slightly creepy sexual overtones.  It’s probably saying a lot that I can be bought merely by singing “na na na na na na na na”, but let’s not think about that and just listen to this awesome song again.
