Radio 53, side B, track 5: “Chariots Of Fire” by Vangelis, #47 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Vangelis - Chariots Of FireOh, Vangelis, I’ve got a bone to pick with you.  I was very aware of this song throughout my childhood.  It was one of those songs that was played all the time.  I’m not sure WHERE it was being played, but if you grew up in the ’80s, this song was just woven into the fabric of your life.  And everyone knew it was from some movie, but I don’t know if there’s anyone in the world who’s actually seen that movie.  And I was pretty excited to see it show up on the countdown, and hence, my tape collection.  It added a little bit of class to the whole thing.

Now here’s where the bone-picking begins, Vangelis.  Because I enjoyed this song so much, there was always this tiny amount of guilt that I’d never actually seen the movie.  I knew the movie had won the Academy Award; back then, unlike today, I believed that winning the Oscar truly meant something.  I believed that if a movie won Best Picture, it was indeed the best picture for that year.  Now of course I know that the Academy Awards are just another silly political game, but even with that knowledge, there was a part of me that always felt I should have seen “Chariots Of Fire”.  After all, this song is so uplifting and moving and with a title like “Chariots Of FIRE”, I mean, come on!  It’s got to be an unbelievably dramatic tour de force of amazingness, right Vangelis?

Well, buuullshit, Vangelis.  Bull.  Shit.  I finally rented the movie from Netflix a few years back, and I would LIKE to say that I was aghast at how ridiculously dull the movie was, but it was so ridiculously dull that a feeling of being aghast would take too much energy.  All I really remember of the movie, besides fighting to stay awake, that is, is drab olives and browns.  It was like the movie was shot in Bore-O-Vision.

I blame it all on you, Vangelis.  If it hadn’t been for this great song, I wouldn’t have ever had the slightest bit of interest in watching that overrated snooze-fest.  Thanks a lot.

By the way, Vangelis, “Chariots Of Fire” beat out “Raiders Of The Lost Ark” for the Oscar that year.

Bull.  Shit.
