Radio 54, side B, track 1: “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” by Bonnie Tyler, #35 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse Of The HeartOh, Bonnie Tyler, my god this song is amazing!  This was the kind of song that made being in love and being full of angst and all that other stuff one went through as a teenager sound as epic as it felt.  I’m pretty sure this was the first time I heard this song (and was of course horrified that the first couple lyrics got cut off what with it being the first track and me having to fast forward though side A to get to side B blah blah blah).  This was one of the songs that I’d play if I just really wanted to FEEL, you know?

The strongest memory I have of this song actually happened several years after I recorded this one off the radio.  It was actually during my senior year at a school assembly.  It was one of those assemblies we’ve all been to, about empowering teens to make good decisions, blah blah blah, usually led by a motivational speaker in his or her twenties, which I didn’t really think about at the time, but who the hell has all their shit figured out in their twenties?!?!?  Very sketch, Bonnie Tyler.

Anyway, this particular assembly was led by a group of teens who traveled from high school to high school and basically did interpretive dance around the dangers of drugs and alcohol.  And one of their performances was based on this song.  And it was pretty beautiful, Bonnie Tyler.  Obviously, this song had a lot to do with it.  You put anything set to this song, it’s going to make it 100% cooler anyway.  But basically, there were several kids standing up on raised blocks wearing sashes that said stuff like ALCOHOL and MARIJUANA and such, and there was a girl and a boy, both very attractive, and they were a couple, and the girl was starting to walk toward the kids with the sashes.  And as she’s walking toward them, the boy would call out/lip-synch “Turn around” in time to the lyrics to try to bring her back to him.  Of course she resists, and then she takes all the kids in sashes by the hands and they all dance around her and she’s ecstatic and is whirling around and eventually collapses and then the boy runs to her and holds her in his arms as the kids in sashes slink off into the night.

It was pretty amazing, Bonnie Tyler.  I had tears in my eyes.  Again, a lot of credit goes to your song, but even now, as I’m listening to the song and remembering that performance, the images of that performance still gets me a little choked up.  Obviously, as powerful as it was at the time, it did nothing to stop me from falling into my own abyss of alcohol abuse during my college years and beyond, and honestly, I think the bigger message I got out of it was that I wanted to find a pretty girl to save while this song was playing in the background.  So I think I may have missed most of the point of that whole presentation, but they still did a great job.

“Total Eclipse Of The Heart”

(Turn around)
Every now and then I get a little bit lonely and ya never comin’ ’round
(Turn around)
Every now and then I get a little bit tired of listening to the sound of my tears
(Turn around)
Every now and then I get a little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by
(Turn around)
Every now and then I get a little bit terrified and then I see the look in your eyes
(Turn around, bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turn around, bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apaaart
(Turn around)
Every now and then I get a little bit restless and I dream of something wild
(Turn around)
Every now and then I get a little bit helpless and I’m lyin’ like a child in your arms
(Turn around)
Every now and then I get a little bit angry and I know I have ta get out and cry
(Turn around)
Every now and then I get a little bit terrified but then I see the look in your eyes
(Turn around, bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turn around, bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart

And I needjoo now tonight

And I needja more than ever

And if you only hold me tight

We’ll be holding on forever

And we’ll only be makin’ it right

‘Cause we’ll never be wrong, together we can take it to the end of the line
Ya love is like a shadow on me all’a the time
(All’a the time)

I don’t know what ta do and I’m always in the dark
We’re livin’ in a powder keg and givin’ off spaaarks
I really needja tonight
Forever’s gonna start tonight
Forever’s gonna start tonight
Once upon a time I was falling in love
Now I’m only falling apart

There’s nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart

Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there’s only love in the dark

Nothin’ I can say
A total eclipse of the heart

<awesome Bonnie Tyler jam>

(Turn around, bright eyes)

(Turn around, bright eyes)

(Turn around)
Every now and then I know you’ll never be the boy you always wanted to be
(Turn around)
But every now and then I know you’ll always be the only boy who wanted me the way that I am
(Turn around)
Every now and then I know there’s no one in the universe as magical and wondrous as you
(Turn around)
Every now and then I know there’s nothing any better
There’s nothing that I just wouldn’t do
(Turn around, bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turn around, bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight (and I need you)
And I need you more than ever

And if you only hold me tight (if you’ll only)
We’ll be holding on forever

And we’ll only be making it right (and we’ll never)
‘Cause we’ll never be wrong, together we can take it to the end of the line

Love is like a shadow on me all of the time
(All of the time)

I don’t know what ta do, I’m always in the dark
Livin’ in a powder keg and givin’ off spaaarks

I really needja tonight
Forever’s gonna start tonight
(Forever’s gonna start tonight)
Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I’m only falling apart

Nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart

Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there’s only love in the dark

Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heeeeart

A total eclipse of the heeeeart

A total eclipse of the heeeeart

(Turn around, bright eyes)

(Turn around, bright eyes)
(Turn around)
