Radio 55, side A, track 4: “Everything She Wants” by Wham!, #26 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Wham - Everything She WantsOh, Wham!, daaaamn!  I didn’t realize until this post just how much I missed out on by not owning “Make It Big” as a kid.  This is the third song from that album that’s made it onto the countdown, and all three of them kick all kinds of ass.  But alas, “Make It Big” came out in ’84, when I was 9, and before I knew anything about recording music off the radio or the Columbia House Music Club, or before it even occurred to me to take an interest in music that my parents didn’t listen to (not that I’m knocking my parents’ taste mind you, since I grew up with a healthy respect if not outright love for The Beach Boys, The Oak Ridge Boys, and Eddie Rabbitt, to name just a few of the artists whose records would play on our two-ton stereo-slash-dining room cabinet.).  I do remember that I was always peripherally aware of the popularity of your album even as a young boy, to the point where I thought the name of your band was “Wham! Make It Big”, since that’s how you were always referred to.

As for this particular song, no surprises, I didn’t really pay much attention to the lyrics at the time, but let me just say that I hope your kid didn’t listen to this song.  How depressing would it be to hear your future father singing “I’ll tell you that I’m happy if you want me to” when discussing the news of your impending birth.  Frankly, kid, if George Michael’s the father, there’s going to be a lot of awkward discussions.  But look at the bright side, even though your parents clearly hate each other and should have put a lot more thought into their relationship before bringing another life into this crazy world, at least you got a great song out of the deal, right?
