Oh, U2, this song is a fantastic one, no doubt. But as I was reading some of the notes about this one, it talked about how this is the song that y’all played at the Super Bowl in ’02. Had kinda forgotten about that. I’m sure I have the contrary and minority opinion on that particular performance, but it made me a bit sad and sick watching it. I’ve given y’all the business now and again on here for being pretentious as all get out, but now I’m wondering if my derision started at that half-time show. To refresh your memory, they started scrolling the names of all the victims of 9/11, and at the height of the song, you ripped open your jacket to reveal it was lined with the American flag. The stadium went nuts. The crowd loved it. But to me, it seemed wrong to have all these folks screaming and trying to touch you and rocking out while the names of the recently dead hovered in the air as set dressing. It felt wrong. Still does. Of course, those were weird times. As opposed to now, when the host of “The Apprentice” is now the leader of the free world.
