Radio 55, side B, track 7: “Nothin’ But A Good Time” by Poison, #17 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Poison - Nothin' But A Good TimeOh, Poison, ya know, it hit me today that I’ve got some self-esteem issues.  I know, Poison, shocking, right?  But it occurred to me that every time a song that I’d recorded showed up on this countdown, there was a part of me that would joke about how I didn’t think it necessarily deserved to be on the countdown because it was “too new”.  Which might be part of the case.  But the weird thing about making tapes off the radio is that I get kinda proprietary about the songs.  Once they’ve made it onto a tape, once they’re part of my collection, it’s like some strange bond has occurred between the song and me, even if I don’t necessarily even like the song, I’ll like it because I recorded it.  But what occurred to me was that if I really liked a song and thought it was awesome, if the song became a big hit between 1988 and 1990, when my recording days were at their peak, I kinda felt like they couldn’t have been as good or as interesting because I was around when they were big and if I thought they were important, clearly they couldn’t be.  It’s like a reverse ego judo chop, wherein things are less important because of their proximity to me.  I’ve got some issues, Poison.

Anyway, my point is that I was all set to make some joke about how I couldn’t believe you guys made it all the way to #17 of the top 90 songs of the decade, but that’s when I had my sad revelation, and now I’ve embraced my love for my music (that’s right, Poison, MY music!), and now I say of COURSE you cracked the top 20!  This song is fantastic.  And it’s full of all kinds of nostalgia for me because it was only the 4th song I ever recorded off the radio, and as a result, I’ve listened to it roughly a million times.  Every time I hear it I’m reminded of how excited I was to record “cool” music off the radio, of how I felt just a teensy bit subversive (even though I didn’t know what subversive meant at the time) because I was recording music by bands that sang hard rock and wore tight jeans and earrings and make-up.  Where I could rock out in my bedroom and pretend that by knowing all these songs by heart I’d be considered one of the cool kids.  Hell, Poison, that I’d be cool enough to hang out with y’all.  Of course, none of that was true.  And still isn’t.  Now that I’ve discovered Spotify, I can rock out to Kanye and Rihanna and Flo Rida, but I’m guessing we actually wouldn’t have that much in common.  Because my idea of a good time is transcribing lyrics to songs that I recorded off the radio years ago, huddled in a corner with my headphones on and smiling to myself and praying that I’ll never get stuck in a room with a bunch of people all enjoying this song together.  It don’t get better than this.

“Nothin’ But A Good Time”

Woo!

<awesome Poison jam>

Now listen

Not a dime, I can’t’a pay my rent
I can barely make it through the week

Saturday night I’d like ta make my girl though right now I can’t’a make ends meet, no

I’m always workin’, slavin’ every day
Gotta get a break from the same-old same-old
I need a chance just to get away
If you could hear me think
This is what I’d say

Don’t need nothin’
But a good time

How can I resist
Ain’t lookin’ for nothin’
But a good time
And it don’t get better than this

Say I spend my money on women and wine
But I couldn’t tell ya where I spent last night

I’m real sorry ’bout the shape I’m in
I just like my fun every
Now and then

I’m always workin’, slavin’ every day
Gotta get a break from the same-old same-old
I need a chance just to get away
If you could hear me think
This is what I’d say

Don’t need nothin’
But a good time

How can I resist
Ain’t lookin’ for nothin’
But a good time
And it don’t get better than this

Ya see I

I raise a toast to all of us
Who are breakin’ our backs every day

If wantin’ the good life is such a crime’a

Lord, then put me away, yeah
Here’s to ya

<awesome Poison jam>

Don’t need nothin’
But a good time

How can I resist
Ain’t lookin’ for nothin’
But a good time
And it don’t get better than this

Don’t need nothin’
But a good time

How can I resist
Ain’t lookin’ for nothin’
But a good time
And it don’t get better than this

Don’t get better, baby
