Radio IV, side B, track 12: “Fallen Angel” by Poison

Oh, Poison, you guys were so good at rockin’, and this was my favorite of your songs.  Maybe it’s because it was a little more serious than your party hits like “Nothin’ But a Good Time”, but not crazy serious like “Every Rose Has Its Thorn”.  Maybe it’s because this one had an interesting story behind it about a small town girl (of which I knew many) who went to the big city and whose life was so interesting that it was commemorated in a song by Poison.  Of course, at the time, I didn’t know that a small town girl going to Hollywood and running into trouble was something of a cliche, but even if I did, so what, right, Poison?  Because this was one particular girl with her own particular problems, and shame on anyone who says her hopes and dreams and trials and tribulations were nothing but cliches.  It’s her life, after all.

But anyway. . .

The main reason I loved this one was probably just because it’s a damn good rock and roll song, with a catchy hook and a great chorus and you guys all sounding at the top of your game.  You guys are awesome, Poison.

“Fallen Angel

She stepped off the bus
Out into the city streets
Just a small town girl,
With her whole life packed in a suitcase by her feet

Somehow the lights didn’t shine as bright as they did
On her mama’s TV screen
And the work seemed harder, days seemed longer
Than she ever thought they did

But you know you gotta stick to your guns
When it all comes down
‘Cause sometimes you can’t choose it
It’s like heads they win, tails you’re gonna lose

Win big, mama’s fallen angel
Lose big, livin’ out her lies
Wants it all, mama’s fallen angel
Lose it all, rollin’ the dice of her life

Now she found herself in the fast lane
Livin’ day to day
Turned her back on her best friends
And watched her family slip away

Just like a lost soul caught up in the Hollywood scene
All the parties and the limousines
Such a good actress hidin’ all her pain
Trading her memories for fortune and fame

Just a step away
From the edge of a fall
Caught between Heaven and Hell
Where’s the girl I knew a year ago?

Win big, mama’s fallen angel
Lose big, livin’ out her lies
Wants it all, mama’s fallen angel
Lose it all, rollin’ the dice of her life

Too much, too soon
I’m just a little too late
‘Cause when her ship came in
She wasn’t there, just wouldn’t wait

<awesome guitar solo>

Win big, mama’s fallen angel
Lose big, livin’ out her lies
Wants it all, mama’s fallen angel
Lose it all, rollin’ the dice of her life

Win big, mama’s fallen angel
Lose big, livin’ out her lies
Wants it all, mama’s fallen angel
Lose it all, rollin’ the dice of her life

Win big, mama’s fallen angel
Lose big, livin’ out her lies
Wants it all, mama’s fallen angel
Lose it all, rollin’ the dice of her life

Win big, mama’s fallen angel
Lose big, livin’ out her lies
Wants it all, mama’s fallen angel
Lose it all, rollin’ the dice of her life

Win big, mama’s fallen angel
Lose big, livin’ out her lies
Wants it all, mama’s fallen angel
Lose it all
