Oh, Beastie Boys, can you believe that in all the time I recorded music off the radio as a kid that I only actually captured one of your songs? This was not one of them, so I am beyond tickled to have another of your songs, and such a flippin’ great one at that. I knew this song, obvs, but it was actually the “Yeah!” at the very beginning that I was the most familiar with. Back in the day, Vic St. John would sample this many, many times while he was talking about the latest hot new music, and I thought it was the best damn phrase. I didn’t know that it was from this song, but I remember how EXCITED I was that I was able to capture that “Yeah!” when they played it right before “Weird Al” started singing “Twister”. And then there it was at the end of the song, too. Clearly the DJ’s slipped it in there because Al was tweaking y’all’s noses a bit, but I was just so happy that I could now listen to that “Yeah!” whenever I wanted to. It’s just one of those phrases that brings a smile to my face any time I hear it.
I’m not sure when I realized that it was a part of this song, but I can tell you that when I did find that out, it made me love y’all even more. And that’s a lot of love, Beastie Boys. Thanks for fightin’ for us!
