Radio 79, side B, track 8: “In A Big Country” by Big Country

Big Country - In A Big CountryOh, Big Country, I MIGHT have heard this one before recording it off of BOB, but I can’t entirely be sure.  Which means to say that I don’t really have any memories of this one, even though I guarantee if it was on my radar as a kid I would have totally adored it.  And I adore it now, especially these lyrics:

I’m not expecting to grow flowers in the desert
But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime

I don’t know what it is.  I think it’s that whole last part about seeing the sun in the wintertime.  There’s something about a bitter cold day where your breath comes out in plumes and the sun is shining down but you still feel like you could freeze to death at any moment; I always hated it when it was happening, but at the same time there was something about it that was romantic and made you feel distinctly alive.  I don’t know if that’s what you were going for, Big Country, but thanks for reminding me about one of the few things I liked about Minnesota winters and for appreciating that I’m now living in a different part of this very big country with a climate more acceptable to me.
