Radio XXXII, side A, track 3: “The Loneliest Heart” by Boys Club

Boys Club - The Loneliest HeartOh, Boys Club, sometimes you can kinda tell why you haven’t heard of a musical group since you heard them back in the day.  Usually, when I’m transcribing the lyrics to a song, I just have to go to Lyrics Wiki, find the song, do a little prettying up and I’m done.  But sometimes, rarely, I’ll run across a song that the internet doesn’t seem to know much about.  And then I have to do the transcribing by myself.  Which is really stressful for me, because as I’ve already shown, I don’t understand the lyrics a lot of the time, and so it’s a lot of pressure to maybe have just created the go-to post when someone is searching for the lyrics for “The Loneliest Heart” by Boys Club.  You can chuckle, Boys Club, but that’s how we got to this point, with me painstakingly listening and re-listening to the lyrics to make sure I got them correctly.

I use “painstaking” loosely, Boys Club, because I found to my great relief that you weren’t breaking a lot of new ground with this song.  Don’t get me wrong, Boys Club, I really enjoy this one, and I remember it fondly from the days when I first recorded it and listened to it frequently.  It’s got some catchy hooks.  But it’s also got lyrics like “I wait for you eight days a week, but, girl, you’re gone, and I can’t get no sleep.”  I’m not saying that these aren’t amazing lyrics, but I’m pretty sure I may have written these exact words in my diary.  Granted, I didn’t accompany those lyrics with some good singing, I’m just saying that this song wasn’t much different from “Dial My Heart” by The Boys, and those guys were like nine years old.

Which brings me back to my original point.  I enjoyed you in 1989, Boys Club, and I’m enjoying this song from 1989 again, but when you’re going up against groups that can write some crazy good (and confusing) lyrics like U2 or even Siouxsie and The Banshees, you really gotta bring your A game all the time.  Or you’re just going to end up being the loneliest heart.

See what I did there, Boys Club?  Feel free to use that.

“The Loneliest Heart”

<awesome Boys Club jam>

I think I need
Ta call my friends

But even friends can’t help you when
You got the loneliest heart

The loneliest heart

I wait for you eight days a week

But girl you’re gone and I can’t get no sleep
I’ve got the loneliest heart

The loneliest heart

Tell me why

Just when I thought thatchoo needed my love
Why

Just when I thought things were getting betteeeer

You left the loneliest heart behind
