Radio 74, side B, track 6: “Come On Eileen” by Dexys Midnight Runners

Dexys Midnight RunnersOh, Dexys Midnight Runners, first thing, this song is so amazingly great.  I think I first heard this on the soundtrack to “Tommy Boy”, and my first thought after hearing it was “Where have you been all my life?”  I also thought that Danny Elfman was the lead singer.

I’ve heard this song so many times and it NEVER gets old.  One of the best songs ever?  Definitely yes.

No surprise, I didn’t know most of the lyrics.  I think “We are far too young and clever” and something about a red dress and that was about it.  So it was exciting to actually read the lyrics and see what you were singing about.  No surprise, a big chunk of this was about you trying to get with Eileen.  But what I didn’t expect was that this song has an undercurrent of fatalism, that Eileen and the guy pursuing her are destined to be yet another generation of smoke-dried faces despite their horny optimism.

I can honestly say I never thought I’d be writing “undercurrent of fatalism” when writing about this song, Dexys Midnight Runners.  I also never thought that I’d want to seek out more of your music, not because I wanted to hear more catchy tunes, but to see what other deep truths I would uncover in your songs.  Thanks for the early Christmas present, Dexys Midnight Runners!
