Radio 80, side B, track 6: “Money For Nothing” by Dire Straits

Dire STraits - Money For NothingOh, Dire Straits and Sting, so great to hear this song again!  If you remember, I recorded it a couple times off the radio as a kid, and then when I revisited it on this here blog, it lead to a whole lot of soul-searching because of that verse about the faggot with the earring and the makeup (which was apparently referring to Vince Neil of Motley Crue). But interestingly enough, all these years later when this song’s on BOB, that verse is completely missing.  Progress?

I don’t know, Dire Straits and Sting.  I would have said that maybe even a week ago, but my wife and I have been having some in-depth conversations about the furor over taking down the Confederate statues in New Orleans.  My gut reaction is “Right on, brother man!”  But as my wife points out, isn’t it important to have reminders of what came before so that we’re not doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past?  Which led me to wonder if instead of tearing them down we add a plaque that puts the statues in more of a context in our more enlightened age (I almost put enlightened in sarcastic quotes, but I’m feeling optimistic).  But statues tend to be erected to honor someone, and so by leaving it up, new plaque or no, does that send a mixed message?  I don’t know, Dire Straits and Sting, and you obviously can’t add a disclaimer to a song that says “you might find this next part offensive”.  Maybe you could.  I’m guessing it wouldn’t sound real great, though.

So I guess at the end of the day, I have no idea what the right answer is.  So I’ll just continue to enjoy the hell out of this fantastic song, regardless of which version I hear, and if it’s ever the original, I’ll feel hopefully the right amount of guilt that I enjoy it so much.
