Radio 74, side B, track 12: “Lights” by Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding - LightsOh, Ellie Goulding, this is the first song I ever heard by you and this is the first time I really listened to it.  Pretty great, Ellie Goulding.  You’re not too bad on the eyes, either.  Not that that should matter, of course.

What I really appreciated was that you actually chimed in on Genius your own self (where I look up most of the lyrics to the songs on here) and explained what this song was about.  Much respect, Ellie Goulding, especially that you provide a pretty succinct explanation, that this song is about being afraid of the dark.  At first blush, it seems like something a grown woman shouldn’t be concerned about, but I get it.  I’ve accidentally shut the light off in our bathroom with no window before opening the door, and even though it was only for a few seconds, it took about a millisecond for the pitch black to feel oppressive and scary.  I used to keep our trash and recycling bins on the side of the house where there’s no real light but changed it up the night I ran into a possum hanging out right in front of them. I also no longer take our compost out to the backyard at night because there was a possum hanging on the fence right next to the compost bin, hissing at me.  We apparently have a lot of possums, Ellie Goulding.  Frankly, the more I’m writing, I’m impressed that considering the subject matter, this didn’t turn into some Nine Inch Nails-sounding stuff.  Good on you for taking a literal dark fear and making it into a light, airy pop song.  I hope this isn’t the last of us, Ellie Goulding.
