Radio 53, side B, track 1: “That’s What Friends Are For” by Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder and Elton John, #51 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Dionne Warwick - That's What Friends Are ForOh, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder and Elton John, wow!  Welcome to the blog!  Well, Elton’s been on here a few times already, and last time we heard from him it was with what was probably my favorite song of his from my childhood.  But the rest of you hadn’t yet graced my cassette tapes, so this was a pretty big deal.  Actually, this song is a pretty big deal.  I don’t think I really gave it much thought at the time I recorded this one off the radio, but listening to it again after all this time, wow.  You were all pop music royalty, and all of you on one song.  And not just a song, but a GREAT song.  What I appreciate about it now is that the song itself is fairly simple, but it gives each and every one of you the opportunity to show off your individual talents, all of which are considerable.

I would love to tell you that I’m the kinda guy who could meet the standards of this song, and I bet I actually believed it back when I recorded this off the radio.  Kinda like I always thought I was a “nice guy”.  But when it comes to friends, I’m “out of sight, out of mind”.  There’s some of it that stems from age-old abandonment issues, which maybe we can talk about some other time, but I think most of it just stems from me being a selfish jerk.  These days, I tend to blame it on my introversion, but that is probably just the newest convenient excuse.  Point being, I love this song, but it also makes me feel a bit guilty knowing that there’s nothing about this song that resembles me.  But at least I have good taste in music.

“That’s What Friends Are For”

And I
Never thought I’d feel this way

And as far as I’m concerned
I’m glad I got
The chance ta say

That I do believe I love you

And if
I should ever go away

Well, then close yer eyes and try

Feel the way we do today

And then if ya can remember

Keep smilin’
Keep shinin’
Knowin’ you can always count on me
Fo sho

That’s what friends are for

For good times
And bad times
I’ll be on your side forever mooore

That’s what friends are foooor

Well, ya came in lovin’ me
And now there’s so much more I see

And so by the way I thank you
Oh and then
For the times when we’re apart
Well, then close your eyes and know
The words are comin’ from my heart

And then if you can remembeeeeer

Ohhh

Keep smiling
Keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me
Fo sho

That’s what friends are fooor

In good times
In bad times
I’ll be on your side forever mooooore

Ohh, that’s what friends are fooooor
Ohhhh, keep smilin’
Keep shinin’
Knowing you can always count on me
Fo sho

That’s what friends are foooor

For good times
And bad times
I’ll be on
Ya side
Foreeeeever moooooore
That’s what friends are fooooooooooooor
Keep smilin’
Keep shinin’
Knowin’ you can always count on me
Oh, fo sho
‘Cause I tell ya, that’s what friends are foooor

Whoa, good times
And fo bad times
I’ll be on yo side forever mooore

That’s what friends are for (that’s what friends are for)
