Radio XL, side A, track 14: “Talk It Over” by Grayson Hugh

Grayson Hugh - Talk It OverOh, Grayson Hugh, I remember thinking what a sly dog you were when I heard this song (this AWESOME song, by the way) and I realized that you were using this song to get your lady friend to “talk it over in bed”.  Nice.  Hearing that as a teen, I couldn’t help but respect what a ballsy move that was on your part.  Here this girl is pissed at you, and sure you’re apologizing, but you’re asking if you can hash out all your issues in bed.  Presumably naked.  And while you’re having sex.  High five, Grayson Hugh! Having been  in the doghouse with women many times over the years, I don’t know that I’ve ever tried that particular tactic.  If I had, I guarantee it wasn’t successful.  I have a feeling you’re a lot smoother than I am, though, Grayson Hugh.

I will say, though, that my wife and I do settle most of our issues in bed.  No, I don’t mean that, Grayson Hugh (but high five again for thinking it!).  But my wife’s got a pretty strict rule about not going to bed angry.  It generally works.  And the few times that it doesn’t, we’re both just co-dependent enough that we can’t sleep if the other person’s angry at us anyway, so it works itself out.  Back when I listened to this song when it was a big hit on the radio, I could only really imagine two things you’d do with a woman in bed.  One involved sleeping.  The other did not.  Now I know that besides the couch, the bed is where all major life decisions are made.

My wife and I have what we call “summer camp”, where the lights are off and we just lay there in the dark and talk to each other and giggle and joke and just revel in the fact that we’re perfect for each other.  I remember as a kid when I’d be nodding off on the couch in the living room and my parents were going to sleep in the other room and they’d be talking to each other in low, muffled voices and I was always fascinated by what they could possibly be talking about after so many years together.  I get it now, Grayson Hugh.  And I’m gonna say that bedtime conversations are one of my favoritest things about being married.  That and having someone to make grilled cheese sandwiches for me when I’m sick.

Anyway, Grayson Hugh, thanks for a great song that’s changed in meaning for me over the years.  I bet my wife and I will be talking about it this evening.  And I bet you know where that conversation will be happening.
