Radio XXIXXX, side A, track 1: “I Beg Your Pardon (I Never Promised You A Rose Garden)” by Kon Kan

Kon Kan - I Beg Your PardonOh, Kon Kan, it’s pretty amazing to me that this was one of the most favoritest of all my radio songs growing up, but I really didn’t know that much about it.  I didn’t really know your name and I didn’t really pay attention to the lyrics.  All I knew was that when this song came on the radio, I had to record it because it filled me with so much happiness, and even now, as I’m listening to it yet again, it makes me so goddamn happy.  I can’t help but smile and move to this awesome, awesome music.  What’s probably the most ironic is that as happy as this song made me and still makes me to this day, if you pay attention to the lyrics, this song is actually depressing as hell.  It’s really all about two people drifting apart in what is most likely a very messy break-up.  Oh well.  Hopefully it’s some comfort that all their pain and misery is chronicled in one of the best damn songs ever made.

“I Beg Your Pardon (I Never Promised You A Rose Garden)”

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa yeah!

Here we go!

<awesome Kon Kan jam>

There once was a time and there once was a way
We had somethin’ goin’ and to my dismay
Attention to me seemed to drift though I don’t know where

And when we’re alone seems there’s nothin’ to say
I bring up a topic, you push it away
Ya say that you do but I think it’s just you don’t care

Why do I feel you’re using me

<awesome Kon Kan jam>

Are we an item or are we just two
I need some commitment’s all I ask of you
Your lifestyle can change, don’t be ‘fraid what you think’s in store

I know what’s on your mind, you’ve got lots to lose
Your shallow acquaintances, what’s there to choose
You won’t get too deep even though I’m worth so much more

So think about it carefully

Smile for a while and let’s be jolly
Lo-lo-lo-love shouldn’t be so melancholy
Co-co-co-come along and share the good times wh-wh-while we caaaan

<awesome Kon Kan jam>

Do you want ta hustle?

Do you want ta salsa?

Do you want ta hustle?

Do you want ta salsa?

If that’s how you want it that’s how it’ll be
There’s no use in trying or making you see
That love don’t come easy, you don’t know what it’s about

To get things together won’t take any pain
Don’t need to see, hear from you ever again
From this day on, listen, but no more, please count me out

And you know what I’m talkin’ ’bout

Smile for a while and let’s be jolly
Lo-lo-lo-love shouldn’t be so melancholy
Co-co-co-come along and share the good times wh-wh-while we caaaan

<awesome Kon Kan jam>

I know now’s the time that I went to find something new

You know it’s your crime that I’m out to find someone, too

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa yeah!
