Radio 82, side A, track 4: “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days)” by Monica

Monica - Don't Take It PersonalOh, Monica, I’m pretty certain I didn’t hear this song when it first came out, and I think it speaks to my musical world becoming much smaller after I left KISD FM behind and made my way to college and MTV.  Apparently, this was a big hit, but I had no ear for R&B.  I don’t know if it’s because it just wasn’t being played, or I wasn’t seeking it out, or what, but even though this song is clearly the awesome and I’ve listened to it many a time since I recorded it off of BOB, I was completely unaware of your existence until then, Monica.  Had KISD FM still been in my life, I don’t feel like this would have been a thing, Monica.  I was introduced to all kinds of R&B in my formative years because of their crazy good mix of pop music.  But I’m glad that you’re in my life now, Monica.

Also, just wanted to share this with you, I ran across it when I was looking up the lyrics to this one:

Forehead slap.  I understand more now why you and every other woman has some of those days.  Actually, just remembered that I had to sit through a “safety training” not too long ago with a facilities manager whose mindset is straight out of the 1950’s and who explained some emergency scenarios when one might need to call an ambulance, one of those emergencies being when a woman has cramps.  I work at a job where women are in the definite majority, including that meeting I had to endure, yet most of the senior leadership is firmly male, including the toolbag who thinks women can’t handle their periods.  Honestly, if it weren’t for my wife continuing to school me, I probably wouldn’t be that far removed from that toolbag, Monica, but I’m working on it.  And I will totally not take it personal if you’re having one of dem days, whether it relates to menstruation or not.
