Oh, Nu Shooz, I totally hear what you’re saying. I couldn’t wait, either. Back around the time I recorded this off the radio, I was at about the height of junior high drama. You remember those heady days, Nu Shooz, when one bad hair day could mark you for life. Where you sent notes to girls that said “Do you like me? Check yes or no.” And if they checked “No”, it was the worst thing that had ever happened to anyone ever in the history of the world. You’ll probably recall that I was never very good with the ladies back in high school, Nu Shooz. And looking back, my m.o. was fairly creepy. For one thing, I pretty much asked every girl in the tri-county area to be my girlfriend. But the way I did it was always with an intermediary. Some hapless friend would have to go ask the girl if she wanted to “go with me” or pass a note on my behalf, and that’s where the waiting came in. Sometimes I didn’t get an answer right away, or I asked on a Friday right before school let out. And the hours and/or days before I got my answer were interminable, Nu Shooz. I imagined every possible scenario, from an outright no to planning our wedding and nursing home. As you can imagine, the answer was pretty much always “no”. And then I would sink into a deep dark depression and ask why no one would go out with me.
How much different would my life had been if I just walked up to these girls and said “I think you’re cute and I think we’d have fun together and I think we should see what happens”, Nu Shooz. I’m not saying that I wouldn’t have ultimately gotten the exact same response of “No way, Jose!”. I mean, we had the mullet and/or perm plus the glasses to contend with. However, I wouldn’t have had to have waited for an answer. Plus I wouldn’t have put my friends through what was clearly an awkward situation in the first place. God, I was an asshole, Nu Shooz.
Anyway, thanks for making such a great song, Nu Shooz, and reminding me that anything worth having is actually worth waiting for, even if you really, really don’t want to.
