Radio XI, side A, track 1: “Beach Baby” by The First Class

Oh, The First Class, it’s because of you that people look at me funny in the grocery store.  Well, there are actually more reasons than that, but you’re ONE of the reasons.  See, the supermarket I shop at plays great classic songs from the fifties and sixties (that was last century for those of you young’uns).  It’s the standard fare, all good, but stuff you’ve probably heard a thousand times before.  But then, one day, as I’m looking for affordable microwave dinners, I hear it.  That wonderful call of the ocean from “Beach Baby”, that siren song of “Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah” drifting through the aisles of canned peas and bottled gravy.  And without realizing it, I’m singing right along with it, tapping my feet, shaking my butt just a little, all unknowingly as I’m deciding if I should buy 5 Lean Cuisines for the price of 4.  It would be a second before I realized that the song wasn’t just coming from the speakers but from me as well, but it was enough time for some fellow shoppers to quietly smirk at the weird potato-shaped fellow listening to that bittersweet melody about love and loss on the beach.  It was embarrassing, The First Class.  But next time I hear it while I’m getting some Tuna Helper, I’ll do it all over again.

“Beach Baby”

Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

Do you remember back in old L.A. (oh oh oh)
When everybody drove a Chevrolet (oh oh oh)
Whatever happened to the boy next door
The sun-tanned crew-cut all-American male

Remember dancin’ at the high school hop (oh oh oh)
The dress I ruined with the soda pop (oh oh oh)
I didn’t recognize the girl next door
The beat-up sneakers and the ponytail

Beach baby, beach baby, gimme your hand
Gimme somethin’ that I can remember
Just like before, we can walk by the shore in the moonlight

Beach baby, beach baby, there on the sand
From July to the end’a September
Surfin’ was fun, we’d be out in the sun every day

Mmm
I never thought that it would end (ooo ooo)
Mmm
And I was everybody’s friend (ooo ooo)
Long hot days (do do-do-do-do)
Blue sea haze (do do-do-do-do)
Jukebox plays
But now it’s fading awaaaaaay

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Do do do do do do do do
Do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-dooooooo

Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

We couldn’t wait for graduation day (oh oh, no)
We took the car and drove to San Jose (oh oh oh)
That’s where ya told me that you’d wear my ring
I guess you don’t remember anything

Beach baby, beach baby, give me your hand (give me your hand)
Give me somethin’ that I can remember (give me something to remember)
Just like before we can walk by the shore in the moonlight

Beach baby, beach baby, there on the sand (there on the sand)
From July to the end of September (from July to September)
Surfin’ was fun, we’d be out in the sun every day

<awesome The First Class jam>

Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

Beach baby, beach baby
Beach baby, beach baby
Beach baby, beach baby
Do do, do do do do
Beach baby, beach baby
Beach baby, beach baby
Beach baby, beach baby
Do do, do do do do
