Radio XXV, side A, track 10: “Are You Experienced?” by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You ExperiencedOh, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, there is a certain kind of music and a certain kind of person that can only be truly appreciated when one is under the influence of a mind-altering substance, illegal or otherwise.  And when you’re not under the influence of said substances, sometimes you’re kinda like, “So, uh, what’s the big deal?”  As you’re probably already well aware, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, I wasn’t exactly what you would call “cool” or “hip” or “with it” or any other word one would use to describe someone who was able to comfortably fit in socially.  But I’ve always been a reasonably smart guy, and I thought that even if I couldn’t physically fit in with anyone, I was at least aware of why the cool people were cool even if I wasn’t.

But there came a moment in the summer after my freshman year of college that I had my first moment truly understanding that I was incapable of being a cool person.  One of my roommates lent me his copy of On The Road by Jack Kerouac.  This was the same roommate with whom I’d shared my first experience with marijuana.  So I should have known better as it was, but he couldn’t say enough about this book and how it had basically changed his life.  That’s a pretty bold statement, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, so I thought I’d give it a go.  Well, I didn’t finish the book.  And the only thing I got out of it was that Jack Kerouac needed to get a real job and also that he was a horrible nephew.  If MY nephews ever wire me for money because they can’t hold down a job because they’re too busy “experiencing life”, guess what I’m going to tell them, The Jimi Hendrix Experience?

So that was the first, but not the last, of those moments where I realized that my Minnesota farmboy tendencies were genetically hardwired into me.  My roommate was intrinsically cool and I was biologically incapable of it.  Sure, I drank, a LOT, during my college years, and I’ve done some things that might be considered wild, but I showed up to work every day.  Well, almost every day.  Let’s just say I have a better work ethic than Jack Kerouac.

And no offense is meant to you guys, either, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, because I think this song is great, but when I hear you singing about watching the sun rise from the bottom of the sea, my reaction is less “Far out, man!” and more “Get a job, hippie!”  But do I get points for at least recognizing that that’s probably a sad thing?  No, I didn’t think so. . .

If you can just
Get your
Mind together

A’then come on across to me

We’ll hold hands an’ then we’ll
Watch the sun rise

From the bottom of the sea

But first

Are you ex-perienced?

Or have you ever been experienced?
I haaaaaave, mmm

I know, I know
You’ll probably scream ‘n cry
That your little world won’t let ya gooo

But who in your measly little world
Are you tryin’ ta prove that
You’re made out of gold and’a

Can’t be sold

So, uh
Are you ex-

Have ya ever been experienced?

I haaaaave

Ah, let me
Prove it to you

<awesome The Jimi Hendrix Experience jam>

Trumpets and violins I can’a
Hear in the distance

I think they’re calling our naaames

Maybe now you can’t hear them
But you will, ha ha
If you just
Take hold of my haaand

Oh, but are you experienced?

Have you ever been experieeeenced?

Not necessarily stoned, but
