Radio XXXVII, side B, track 3: “Praying To A New God” by Wang Chung

Wang Chung - Praying To A New GodOh, Wang Chung, it’s hard to believe, but even though everybody else knew how to Wang Chung tonight, this song was actually my first introduction to you guys, so I had a way different perspective on your music than I would have had I first heard your most popular hits.  Based on the this song, I thought you guys were edgy counter-culturists who set their sacrilegious words to great music.  You have to understand, Wang Chung, as I’ve said many times before on this blog, I grew up immersed in the church.  So when I heard a song that had lyrics saying “Start praying to a new god”, well. . .

The worst part about it was that I loved this song so much.  I got a giddy little thrill out of enjoying it, too, since it was saying some things that would have gotten me into some hot holy water were I to utter them in the narthex.  And of course that just raised my anxiety, because if I was enjoying this song, it pretty much meant I was going to hell.  Or at minimum that I was a godless Communist, which I had been warned about at Bible camp and Vacation Bible School.  This song basically was telling me to break the First Commandment, and I was kinda okay with that.

That’s the thing, Wang Chung, it’s easy to say you’re not going to break any of those Commandments when you’re surrounded by adults glowering at you and you’re sequestered away in a town so small there’s not even room for temptation.  But sometimes yelling “Jesus H. Christ!” is the only way to truly voice your displeasure.  Sometimes you don’t want to honor your father and mother because they wouldn’t let you go see “Return of the Jedi”.  And is it really THAT bad if I spend all of Sunday taping songs off the radio instead of reading the Bible?

Yes.  Yes it is, Wang Chung.  That’s what I was taught growing up, anyway.

I’m so going to hell. . .

What came over you is comin’ over me

I’ve had enough
Of all the old stuff

Like it or not

Like it or not
Ya better start prayin’ to a

Start prayin’, prayin’ to a new god
Start prayin’ to a neeew, neeew god
They’re sayin’ the devil’s got a new job
Start prayin’ to a neeeeeeew

A lotta Babel
Came down the cable
Everybody can be famous for a day

From shore ta shore
A big department store
Is all that’s left of the American way
It’s another second comin’
Like it or not

Like it or not
Ya better start prayin’ to a

Start prayin’ to a neeew, neeew god
Start prayin’, what are you afraid of
Start prayin’ to a neeeeeeew
There’s a biiig wooorld (big world)
In the street outside (in the street outside)
In their uniform (uniform)
Of pride (pride)

<awesome Wang Chung jam>

Feel like I’m crucified
Still I’m not satisfied
The second comin’
Is comin’ anyway

I see them pray for more
On every dance floor
I hear the wooord across the Milky Way
It’s another second comin’
Like it or not
Yeah

Oh yeah

It’s another second comin’
Like it or not
Ya better start prayin’ to a
New gooood

Start prayin’, prayin’ to a new god
Start prayin’ to a neeew, neeew god
Suc-cess and money’s what he’s made of
Start prayin’ to a neeeeeeew god

Start prayin’, prayin’ on the airwaves
Start prayin’ to a neeew, neeew god
